Jacoby Jones: Dancing With the Stars

Baltimore magazine

Can Jacoby Jones take it to the next level?

Sure, he made the NFL's All-Pro squad as a kick returner, scored two crazy touchdowns in the Super Bowl and caught the most dramatic TD in Ravens' history in the playoff win over the Denver Broncos. We know he can dance in the end zone.

But how will his hip shakin' score on the dance floor?

On this season's “Dancing With The Stars," which debuts March 18, Jones will be the latest football player/contestant.

If history is any precedent, the fleet-footed Jones should do well. Former Cowboy running back Emmitt Smith won DWTS honors, as did former receivers Hines Ward and Donald Driver, of the Steelers and Packers, respectively.

Jones, however, won't be the only Baltimorean representing on DWTS — 1976 Olympic figure skating champion Dorothy Hamill, who resides here, will also...

Ravens center Matt Birk announces his retirement

Ravens fans saw this one coming—especially after we clinched a Super Bowl victory—but center Matt Birk announced today he's officially retiring.

Birk signed with the Ravens in 2009 and has been a consistently solid center (bleeding nose bridge and all) for our offense ever since.

"Matt Birk has been a huge part of this program for the last four years," Coach John Harbaugh said at media day in New Orleans. "To my eye, he is playing the best football that he's played since he’s been here—right now, at this point."

While the 6'4", 310-pound Harvard graduate was surely a quarterback's best friend on the field, Birk and Joe Flacco also developed a good rapport off of it.

In a 2012 Baltimore magazine article, Birk told us, "Joe's always been Joe," he says. "Joe might be a...

Washington Post Writer Wakes From Coma, Discovers Baltimore

Did you guys get a load of this risbile travel piece in today's Washington Post?

It's written by a guy named Marc Fisher who LITERALLY still bases his opinion of our town on the Randy Newman song "Baltimore" that was WRITTEN IN 1977.

This has to be one of the most bizarre travel pieces I've ever come across. It would be one thing if the writer was from, I dunno, Norway or something, and had outmoded views of Baltimore, based on strange snippets of pop culture (The Wire, old John Waters films, a 1977 song) that came wafting his way across the pond. But Fisher lives ONE TOWN OVER!! He acts like his sojourn into Baltimore is some sort of perilous, heroic journey—like a risky assignment in a wartorn nation.

Dude.

A few choice quotes from the piece (with our reaction, in paranthesis):

"I’ve always been torn about Baltimore...

House Passes Favorable Pit Bull Bill

Credit: Daniel Bedell

The House of Delegates unanimously approved a bill Thursday that would override a Maryland Court of Appeals' decision last spring that declared pit bulls "inherently dangerous."

Maryland's top court found that pit bull owners and landlords were strictly liability for pit bull bites — even if there was not evidence that the dog had bitten previously, which was the old standard.

Baltimore magazine wrote about the pit bull controvery this month, including the case that compelled the Maryland Court of Appeals' decision and subsquent uproar from pit bull advocates from across the state.

House Bill 78 passed by a vote of 133-0 following a...

AP Exams: Maryland Ranks No. 1 (Again)

Courtesy: Maryland State Department of Education

The good news keeps coming for Maryland public education: For the seventh straight year, state public high school students ranked first in the country in their Advancement Placement scores.

In Maryland, the percentage of graduating seniors earning a score of 3 or higher on one or more AP exams rose to 29.6 in 2012, the highest percentage in the nation and an increase over the 27.9 percent mark for 2011, according to the College Board's "Annual AP Report to the Nation."

Earlier this year, the state’s public school system retained its No. 1 position in Education Week’s annual national rankings for a fifth straight year.

"On behalf of the College Board, I want to thank the state's leadership for its vision, determination, and courage," said College Board president David Coleman in a statement. "One of the greatest challenges for educators over the next few years will be to ensure excellence and equity at the heights of academic achievement, and...

Game Over: National Pinball Museum Closing

Courtesy: National Pinball Museum's Facebook page

Baltimore's shrine to the silver ball, a little more than a year after opening on Water Street, is looking for new digs. Again.

The National Pinball Museum first opened in Georgetown two years ago, but then was forced to leave their location there by real estate developers, according to a Huffington Post story in November 2011. Now, the museum is being forced to move again after failing to successfully negotiate a lease agreement with its current landlord, according to an e-mail from David Silverman, executive director and curator of the National Pinball Museum, to supporters of the museum:

“After such a successful year, everyone at the Museum was looking forward to continuing our tournaments, educational programs and interactive exhibits in our current location for the foreseeable future," Silverman wrote. "...

Michael Phelps: Next On Golf Channel’s ‘Haney Project’

Courtesy: Michael Phelps' Facebook page

From the pool to the putting green. Baltimore’s favorite amphibian, the man with the most Olympic medals ever, is tackling a slower-paced game now—golf—and the world can watch his progress on the Golf Channel show, “The Haney Project,” beginning Feb. 25 at 9 p.m.

Michael Phelps, whose handicap is roughly equal to the record number of medals he's won — 22 — will receive professional help from Hank Haney, known for working with Tiger Woods, among others, on the fifth season of “The Haney Project.” Past Haney pupils have included ex-NBA star Charles Barkley, infamous for his gangly swing, comedian Ray Romano, and radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

“Normally, you think you can just pick anything up and do it,” Phelps said in a video...

Raven to Join Oriole as State Bird?

Courtesy: Wikipedia

On the heels of the Baltimore Ravens' thrilling playoff run and Super Bowl victory, state legislators have introduced Senate and House bills to make the raven an official state bird of Maryland.

Of course, Maryland already has one state bird, our beloved Baltimore oriole, which received its special distinction in 1947. (Although the state first made special provisions to protect the Baltimore oriole in 1882, according to Maryland records.)

According to reporting by The Washington Post,Baltimore County state Sen. Bobby Zirkin, a Democrat, filed a bill Thursday afternoon that would place the raven alongside the oriole, essentially giving Maryland two state birds. Identical legislation, with...
