As we mentioned last month, Diner—the classic Baltimore-set movie directed by hometown hero Barry Levinson—is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. And it's been quite an auspicious anniversary year so far: In it's March issue, Vanity Fair named the 1982 film the most influential of the last 30 years. And now, the long-awaited Broadway musical version of Diner is set to debut for four weeks of previews at San Francisco's SHN Curran Theater on October 23rd.
Levinson wrote the book for the musical and Sheryl Crow wrote the music and lyrics. When I interviewed Levinson several weeks ago for a feature in our April issue, I asked whether there was any chance the preview shows would be in Baltimore and he said probably not, that we're too close to New York. He did offer the following thoughts on the musical, which is set to debut on Broadway in the Spring of 2013:
The Broadway show is exciting. As it moves ahead, I’m quietly enthused. You’re always wondering, like, “Is this going to keep going along this way? Is this really gonna happen?” Because there’s all these tales of things that are gonna be and they never happen. But Sheryl’s music is fantastic, very compatible with the pieces. It is a very good reflection of what Diner is. The music is very strong, personal at times, it also has a lot of energy at other times. It doesn’t overwhelm the piece and I think it does expand on it in some very, very beneficial ways as a musical. The storyline is the same. I didn’t try and re-invent it, it was what it was.
