A Louis C.K. Pre-game video

If you're anything like us here at Baltimore magazine, you're pretty giddy about the Louis C.K. shows tonight at the Meyerhoff. By most accounts, he's the best standup out there right now, and he'll be performing all new material tonight in preparation for his new upcoming standup special, which will be available only through his website, louisck.net. For the uninitiated, below is his appearance on last night's Conan. The two have lots to chat about since C.K. was one of the original writers on O'Brien's old Late Night show on NBC. They reminisce (darkly) about the old days and then Louis tells very funny stories about seeing George W. Bush and Twitter, with bonus Pittsburgh trashing. Enjoy. (Kind of sweary, so probably NSFW)

Om, my! Yoga with Ravens Ricky Williams

ricky williamsPractice sun salutations, chanting, and more with Ravens running back Ricky Williams at a mass yogi gathering to benefit his foundation, a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged youth.

Williams will lead a yoga and meditation class at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Stevenson University in the Mustang Arena. Tickets cost $100, with proceeds going toward the Ricky Williams Foundation.

Charm City Yoga, a co-sponsor of the event, will have 18 of its top teachers assisting at the class, according to a recent newsletter.

The event also features a vendor village, raffles, and prizes.

Williams—a Heisman Trophy winner—turned to yoga, meditation, and holistic healing after failed drug tests and an early NFL retirement. He returned to the field and credits his yoga practice for gaining inner balance in all aspects of his life.

Hrabowski Wins $500,000 Award

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski has been awarded a $500,000 grant for academic leadership from the Carnegie Corporation. According to a Carnegie press release, the award acknowledges "[Hrabowski's] development of a culture of excellence and success in preparing students of all backgrounds to go on to earn Ph.D.’s in science and engineering." Carnegie also praised Hrabowski for "[building] on that success to infuse principles of excellence and teaching innovation throughout the university."

Hrabowski will reportedly use the money to start a fund, the Freeman Hrabowski Fund for Academic Innovation, to support campus projects and programs that align with those principles.

Hrabowski has long promoted innovation and diversity at the school and viewed demographic differences as potential strengths, rather than potential sources of conflict. In an essay for Baltimore in September 2006, he tellingly wrote...

It is a guiding principle here that living, studying, and interacting with diverse groups strengthen us as people, prepare us for America's emerging demographic reality, and break down barriers that inhibit possibilities for...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus living in Fells

According to a couple sources, former Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been staying in the Crescent at Fells Point while she films the HBO series VEEP. In the show, Dreyfus stars as a former senator and newly elected vice president who finds that the job is nothing like she expected.

Crescent residents have seen Dreyfus around the halls and, when the complex's fire alarm went off at 6:30 a.m. yesterday morning, she was seen outside standing with everyone else.

Hopefully Dreyfus won't be hassled too much while staying in the city. She could always try to blend in by wearing her Orioles hat.

The Only Time Baltimore Booed Jay-Z

Last night, hip-hop superstars Jay-Z and Kanye West came to 1st Mariner Arena for the third date of their Watch the Throne tour, which comes on the heels of their number-one album of the same name.

I had a chance to go to the show and it was an action-packed spectacle. You can read my full review here.

One thing that didn't make it into the review but might be of interest to locals is the only time during the show when the audience booed. At the end of his ode to New York, "Empire State of Mind," Jay-Z took off his Yankee hat and held it out to the crowd. It's the kind of thing he probably does at every show, just a gesture of hometown pride. Well, Baltimore audience members—who had been singing along to every word of every song—showed some hometown pride of their own, giving a hearty "boo" to the gesture celebrating the Orioles' AL East nemesis. Jay-Z looked satisfyingly taken aback.

Mayor Stops By Tavern to Offer Support

As Jess Blumberg reported on our On The Town nightlife blog earlier today, the Mt. Washington Tavern caught fire overnight, causing the second story to collapse into the first and creating what owner Rob Frisch called "a total loss." In a statement posted on the Tavern's Facebook page, the owners promised to come back: "The fire has taken the Tavern for now but we look very forward to rebuilding and being better than ever." You can see some of the damage documented by WBAL's Lowell Melser this morning.

Later in the day, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake stopped by the site. "I can't tell you how many times I've been in the tavern,” she told a WMAR news reporter. “It's a staple in...

Giant Pumpkin Smash!!

It sounds like an event featuring The Incredible Hulk, and, in a way, it is. But these hulks aren't green and they aren't mad—they're just really, really adorable. I'm talking about the Zoo's Annual Giant Pumpkin Smash during which the Zoo's African elephants—Felix, Samson, Anna, and Dolly—are treated to pumpkins (apparently something of a delicacy for elephants). The treat is part of the Zoo's ZooBoooo! event happening all this weekend from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. According to a press release from the Zoo, "guests can watch as many animals receive their own fall treats at different times during the ZooBOOO! weekend.  These types of enrichment activities are designed to add variety and stimulation to the daily routines of animals at the Zoo." The elephants will be given fresh pumpkins to annihilate every morning at 11:30 a.m. There are also plenty of activities for the humans as well including costume competitions and trick-or-treating.

But enough of that. You're here to see a video of elephants crushing stuff, right? I do not blame you. Here you go:

Omar Comin' to TED Talk in DC

Wire cast members Sonja Sohn (Kima Greggs), Michael K. Williams (Omar), Jamie Hector (Marlo Stanfield), and Gbenga Akinnagbe (Chris Partlow) will appear tomorrow at TEDxMidAtlantic in D.C. Along with Donnie Andrews, the real-life Omar, the group will be interviewed by PBS’ Judy Woodruff for what figures to be the first in a series of conversations with Wire cast members about the ongoing economic crisis.

Sohn, who founded the nonprofit ReWired for Change in 2009, said in a press release, “We intend to explore values that revolve around the need for Americans to collectively embrace our humanity, so we as a people become anchored by the principles of human decency as opposed to the polarizing models we are now paralyzed by.” Sohn also noted how that polarization “has caused our nation to split into warring factions based on personal preferences and individual life choices.”

“Today is the beginning of a series of Wire conversations to raise awareness in low income, working and middle class communities across the country,” added Williams. “Now is the time to be the change we seek.  But how do we...

Stay Classy, Todd Heap

In today's Baltimore Sun, on page seven of the sports section, former Ravens tight end Todd Heap bought a half-page, color advertisement to thank Baltimore fans and the Ravens organization. In July, the Ravens released Heap and he signed a two-year contract with his hometown Arizona Cardinals.

But, from the sound of his humble and gracious letter in today's Sun, Heap grew to think of Baltimore as his real home. You're welcome, Heeeeap!

The Electric Company

Good news! With a grant from the Maryland Energy Administration, Baltimore City has installed 9 electric car chaging stations in municipal garages, making it that much easier to own and drive one of those eco-friendly electric cars—like the Chevy Volt or the Nissan Leaf—around Baltimore. Okay, so those supercool jet packs we were all promised by the year 2012 haven't quite panned out, but this all seems quite futuristic and a very positive step for Baltimore.

Here's a list of the participating garages.

(Now if only they could figure out a way for my smartphone to keep its charge all day. . .)
