Ravens vs. Cincinnati: Does it Matter?

Courtesy: Baltimore Ravens' Facebook page

Done deal: The Ravens have clinched the AFC North crown and will host a playoff game at M&T Bank Stadium. Right now, they’re the No. 4 seed, which means if the season ended today, they’d face the Indianapolis Colts (still hard to say those words together, isn’t it?) and rookie quarterback Oliver Luck.

The Ravens have a shot at moving up to the No. 3 seed with a win over the Bengals this weekend in Baltimore. But they also need New England, who plays mediocre Miami, to lose. If that happens, then the Ravens get the Bengals again.

So, the question is, who would the Ravens rather play? And, is the difference between playing the Colts and Bengals worth playing a banged-up starter or risking injury to one of the few healthy players remaining at this point in the season.

My guess is that the Ravens are better off getting the veterans more rest. Then face a rookie quarterback at home rather than a division rival that knows them pretty well. Treat the Bengals game like the...

End of Days in Annapolis

While the world didn't actually end at midnight, many Annapolis residents have felt apocalyptic symptoms anyway.

Around 9 p.m. last night, two main feeders into Annapolis and a high voltage transmission light went down, causing nearly 70,000 people to lose power, according to Baltimore Gas and Electric. Videos like the one below have been circulating, showing the sky light up with eerie blue and green flashes.

Though almost all of the power is back up in Anne Arundel County today, there have been some weather-related outages and the downtown area has experienced pretty severe flooding, pictured. A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 7 p.m.

Here's hoping that our friends in Annapolis ride out the flooding and power outages safely.

Caped Crusader Sentenced to Jail

Courtesy: Baltimore Ravens' Facebook page

Baltimore’s “Don’t be a Bully, be a Super Hero” streaker — 26-year-old Mark Harvey of Severn — likes to run around M&T Bank Stadium and Camden Yards in his Batman underwear and cape.

Wednesday, dressed for court in a shirt and tie, Harvey was sentenced to a weekend in jail, a $400 fine and 80 hours of community service on trespassing and disorderly conduct charges.

Worst of all: the punishment includes a lifetime ban from the two ballparks.

Harvey made national news, even receiving a call from The Ellen Degeneres Show, after racing around in his Batman costume during the Ravens-New England Patriots game Sept. 23 — attention he used to support his Bigger Than Bullying campaign.

Baltimore senior editor Jess Blumberg interviewed Harvey for our December issue:

“In high school, I always tried to make everyone laugh,” Harvey told...

In the spirit of the (shopping) season and supporting local businesses, Baltimore County today announced a five-day parking meter holiday, beginning Dec. 20 and running through Dec. 25.

Shopppers will receive two free hours of parking at 1,735 meters decorated with red "free parking" bags, according to the Baltimore County government website, in Catonsville, Towson, Parkville, Essex, Overlea, Pikesville, Arbutus, Dundalk and Stoneleigh.

"This time of the year it is especially important to support the owners of Baltimore County's local shops and restaurants," said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz in a statement. "We're doing our part with a parking meter holiday so shoppers can help keep the neighborhood economy going strong."

O’Malley Expects to Introduce Gun Control Legislation

Courtesy: RIP Sandy Hook Elementary School Children's Facebook page

In the wake of Friday’s horrific elementary school shooting in Connecticut, Gov. Martin O’Malley told reporters today that he is likely to introduce legislation that could include an assault rifle ban and other gun control measures.

O’Malley also said proposals could include mental health and school safety legislation.

“I think there’s been a change of heart and a greater open-mindedness in the wake of the murder of the innocent in Connecticut for people to take a look at especially assault weapons,” said O’Malley, quoted by the Washington Post this afternoon. “You look at some of these guns, and it’s just hard to conclude that these guns should be in the hands of anyone who isn’t a soldier on a battlefield or a law-enforcement officer sent into a tactical...

Step Aside Tebow-ing, It's Flacco-ing!

Photo: The Baltimore Sun

Poor Joe Flacco. He throws a horrible pick against the Broncos, runs his butt off to try (in vain) to catch up to corner Chris Harris, and faceplants as he makes one last desperate attempt to tackle Harris before he sprints into the end zone. And now, to add insult to injury, his ignominious faceplant has become a Twitter and Tumblr meme, the faceplant heard round the world, so to speak.

A Day To Turn In Your Gun

Managing Editor of Special Editions Ken Iglehart attended the Klein's ShopRite gun buy-back in Northeast Baltimore. Here's what he observed:

People streaming to the gun buy-back in the city’s Coldstream Homestead Montebello neighborhood Saturday probably figured they’d be in and out in a few minutes with their $100 Klein’s ShopRite grocery gift card in hand. So many weren’t really dressed for a long wait.

But as the line into St. Paul Baptist Church grew to a block long, it was clear this would take a while—people waited over an hour to get up to the table in the (thankfully warm) church staffed by Northeastern District police officers.

“I didn’t dress for this,” said one 60-something woman, as she stomped her feet to keep warm, clutching a box with her deceased husband’s silver snub-nosed revolver in it (she brought the ammo, too). “But I don’t need this thing—I need to get rid of it.”

And, despite the cold and the long wait, no one left the line. In fact, if ShopRite—which worked with Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and the Baltimore Police Department to arrange the event—...

Sparrows Point: An Era Comes to an End

Today we face the difficult reality that more than a century of steel making as we know it has come to an end in Baltimore County,” Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said Thursday after the announcement of the sale of the historic Sparrows Point facility’s cold mill assets.

Nucor Corp, a Charlotte-based steel manufacturer, had reported a day earlier that it had brought the Sparrows Point facility from Hilco Industrial, which specializes in industrial auctions for used machinery. Hilco purchased the plant earlier this year during RG Steel’s bankruptcy procedure.

Nucor intends to dismantle Sparrow Point’s cold mill parts for production at the company’s four other mills, president and CEO John Ferriola told American Metal Market.

In 1889, the...

Ravens: Cameron Out; Caldwell In

Courtesy: Baltimore Ravens' Facebook page

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron (above) has been let go and quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell has been promoted to the position, the team announced today.

The change comes in the aftermath of the Ravens' second-straight loss, Sunday's 31-28 overtime defeat in Washington, and a weak, second-half offensive performance.

“It’s not about fair or unfair, right or wrong,” head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. “My responsibility is to the whole team and what’s best for them right now. We need a change. Our plan and our goals are to win games, win our division and get to the playoffs.”

Cameron served as Harbaugh's offensive coordinator since 2008. Prior to coming to the Ravens, Caldwell tutored Peyton Manning in Indianapolis, where he was also the team's head coach for three seasons before being fired after last season.

While the Ravens offense has been up and down all season, the move is remarkable as it comes with the team at 9-4 and firmly...
