New football field in East Baltimore

This morning, Living Classrooms Foundation along with city officials and members of the Baltimore Ravens, are holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new City Springs football field in East Baltimore. The newly renovated football field is adjacent to the City Springs pool at 1500 E. Baltimore Street.

On hand to introduce the new facility—which features a regulation size football field—will be Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Baltimore City Council President Jack Young, Greg Bayor of Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, Coach Joe Ehrmann, Kwame Flaherty of NFL/Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Program, East Baltimore students, Dick Cass of the Ravens, and Ravens players including Ricky Williams, Tyrod Taylor, and Lee Evans.

City Springs football field was initiated by an NFL LISC...

Zappa Number 22 on Rolling Stone's Greatest Guitarist List

With last year's dedication of a Frank Zappa statue on Frank Zappa Way in Highlandtown—presided over by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake—Baltimore's claim to Frank Zappa is solid. (If there's any remaining doubt, Rafael Alvarez's 2009 piece, Charm City Freakout, which chronicled Zappa's links to Baltimore will resolve them).

And so, we get to revel in our native son's posthumous achievements: Last week, Rolling Stone named Zappa number 22 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time. The lauditory listing includes a tribute from Phish's Trey Anastasio, who says he was inspired by Zappa's experimental axe work. "Every boundary that was possible on the guitar was examined by him in ways...

George Clooney: Just Another Disappointed Bengals Fan

George Clooney, who grew up in Kentucky and is a life-long Bengals fan, came to M&T Bank Stadium yesterday to watch his guys go down to the Ravens, 31-24. His publicist, Stan Rosenfield confirms that even though Clooney had elbow surgery in New York on Friday, he came to Baltimore to go to the game with his girlfriend, former Ravens cheerleader Stacy Kiebler.

During the game, Kiebler tweeted, "You kno its love when your boyfriend has elbow surgery 2 days ago and takes u to a #ravens game...especially when he's a Bengals fan." Soon thereafter, former Ravens offensive lineman Jonathan Ogden tweeted a picture of himself with Clooney at the game (left). Asked by a fan how Clooney liked Baltimore and the atmosphere at the stadium, Kiebler said, "he LOVED it."

Kiebler was clearly still feeling the Bmore love late last night, when she posted a...

NYE Fireworks Update

The news that the Inner Harbor's New Year's Eve fireworks could be canceled due to money woes certainly put a damper on the city's pre-holiday mood this week. But it seems that all hope is not lost. In the wake of media coverage warning of the annual celebration's demise, donations have started to roll in.

I just got off the phone with Tracy Baskerville at The Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, the city organization responsible for producing the New Year's spectacle, who said some sizable pledges have come in over the last 24 hours that have made organizers more optimistic that they will be able to cover the minimum $75,000 costs involved in staging the celebration, which annually attracts about 100,000 revelers.

"By yesterday we had a little over $39,000 and then law firm, Kramon & Graham, pledged up to $25,000 but they won't know for sure what they can offer until next week," Baskerville said. [Ed note: After this blog was published, a representative from Kramon & Graham e-mailed stating that no commitment had yet been forged with Office of Promotion and the Arts.]

Baskerville also said word around the office is that Willard Hackerman of construction behemoth Whiting-Turner...

Tall Ships Return, Waters' Interest Ebbs

State officials are hoping tall ships will draw more than a million people to the Inner Harbor next June. A tried and true attraction, the ships will be part of an international maritime festival (June 13-19), which is a key component (no pun intended) of the Star Spangled Banner bicentennial celebration. According to reports, the tall ships drew more than a million visitors to the harbor in 2000, and the tourism folks are hoping they'll help make the upcoming festival the largest ever at the site.

But there's one Baltimorean who definitely won't be attending. John Waters, who's well-known for poking fun at the tall-ships-as-tourist-draw concept, remains unimpressed. Reached via email, Waters says he "still hates tall ships!"

Ravens react to Gerry-Gate

Gerry "not THAT guy" Sandusky gave an interview with Esquire magazine about how the Ravens reacted to his ongoing "that's Gerry with a G" ordeal. Some Ravens responded with sympathy, others, well . . .not so much:

John Harbaugh, he looked at me and said, "Man, this must be just awful for you." They're playing the Steelers in this game and he's worried about me and my name.

Joe Flacco was funny last week. He came up to me and said something along the lines of, "That's a tough break, Gerry. Tough break." And he patted me on the back.

Ed Reed just looked at me after the game and said, "Yep, Gerry Sandusky. That's a rough one."

Target in Canton moves forward

Looks like the dream may just become a reality. According to The Daily Record, owners of Canton Crossing are about to announce the opening of Target and Harris Teeter. A city development source says that the two chains are ready to seal leasing deals with Chesapeake Real Estate Group and BCP Investors LLC, princiapls of the ownership team of the waterfront site near the First Mariner Tower on Boston Street.

If all goes according to plan, Harris Teeter and Target would open by 2013 (the Harris Teeter in Locust Point is set to open December 7).

The opening of these two stores would mean a lot for downtown residents. No more driving to Mondawmin, White Marsh, or Towson for the versatile one-stop-shop that is Target. And a Harris...

5 Good Things About Last Night's Ravens Game

We here at Baltimore magazine are perennial optimists. So, reflecting on the cloud that is our Ravens' painful loss to the previously hapless Seattle Seahawks last night, we found some silver linings...

1. Seattle is a dreary place where it always rains. Our Ravens gave a lot of Seattleites a happy Monday for once.

2. After only 5 carries for 27 yards, Ray Rice should be well rested for next week's game against the Bengals.

3. Paired with the glowing 60 Minutes story about UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski right after the game, it showed that Baltimore has its priorities in order: We care about education, not a silly football game.

4. At least it wasn't the Steelers. (It wasn't even in the AFC—so it won't count as a...

Josh Charles IMPOSTER on Twitter! (Okay, it's Jimmy Fallon)

So check out this very funny interview with the adorkable Josh Charles on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. For reasons not quite made clear—possibly because Jimmy think it's funny that Josh's REAL Twitter handle is @MrJoshCharles?—Jimmy has decided to impersonate him in the guise of a cookie-loving, LOL-abusing fellow named @mxtrjoshcharles.

They also talk about Josh's recent (not-so-funny) brush with death on an elevator and end the segment by playing a little game of poker football.

As always, Josh represents HARD for Baltimore and the Ravens (and shows off a pretty nifty throwing arm, to boot).

Spoiler alert: Expect an Ed Reed bobblehead doll to show up on Jimmy Fallon's desk in the not-so-distant future.

That's Gerry, with a "G"

Poor Gerry Sandusky, WBAL sports director and the voice of the Baltimore Ravens. He sure picked one horrible week to be named Gerry Sandusky.

So what's a guy supposed to do when he shares a very rare name (homonymously-speaking, at least) with the most notorious man in the news? Joke about it on Twitter (@GerrySandusky), of course!

One sample Tweet: Also remember my legal name is Gerard. His is Gerald. Even there we're not the same. Can I have an amen in the house?

He also put out a call for nicknames: The whole Jerry/Gerry Sandusky name confusion thing has me wondering, maybe I need a nickname for awhile. I'm open to all suggestions.

That was followed by this Tweet: Thanks for all the great nickname ideas. From G. to Sandy to Sandman to Voice, I love them all. Can I legally change my name to G.?

At least as far as Bmag is...
