Video: Oriole Bird and Rawlings-Blake Unveil O’s Banner at City Hall

It’s not every day that the Oriole Bird is on the steps of City Hall, leading the Mayor, the City Council and several hundred downtown workers through a chant of “O-R-I-O-L-E-S,” but these are special days in Baltimore.

After making the playoffs for the first time in 15 seasons, knocking off the two-time defending American League champion Texas Rangers in the Wild Card playoff, and beating the hated New York Yankees in Game 2 of the Division Series Monday night at Camden Yards, the O’s head up I-95 tonight for a battle in the Bronx.

“How amazing has this month been?,” Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake asked the crowd, adding that the rally would send a message to the O’s players, letting them know that Baltimore stands behind them.

City Council President Jack Young said this year’s season reminded him of 1966, when the O’s swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. “I am looking forward to the World Series right here,” said Young to hoots and hollers.

Then,...

View from the Upper Deck: Johnson Fans A-Rod to End Game 2

I shot the video accompanying this post from the upper deck behind home plate last night at Camden Yards. It’s less than a minute and a half — the last two pitches from Jim Johnson striking out Alex Rodriguez — and the wild scene during and after the final out of the O’s huge 3-2 win.

The clip starts with fans rising to their feet with two strikes on A-Rod, and then booing loudly when he calls timeout and steps from the batter’s box. The crowd soon rises again, cheering madly until Rodriguez takes Johnson’s ensuing pitch for a ball. (At this point, you can hear Baltimore author and life-long O's fan Rafael Alvarez, standing next to me, chime in: “You don't want Cano coming to the plate,” referring to the Yankee slugger in the on-deck circle.)

Finally, Johnson, who had already retired future Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Ichiro Suzuki, punches out A-Rod and Camden Yards explodes. Fireworks go off over the Eutaw Street scoreboard as the Oriole outfielders leap for a victory bump in centerfield.

I didn’t know if the craziness at Camden Yards was translating to television last night, but the...

O’s Last Home Game? Wei Hope Not

Courtesy: Baltimore Orioles Facebook page

There’s a lot of pressure, to say the least, on Oriole starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chin tonight after the O’s heartbreaking loss to the Yankees yesterday.

We’ve got a couple of staff members here at Baltimore magazine just going to tonight’s game and the tension in the office has been palpable all day. We can’t imagine what the O’s clubhouse feels like right now and the anxiousness the 27-year-old Taiwanese southpaw is facing.

But if the O’s tie the series this evening as we fully expect despite our butterflies — game time is 8 p.m. — they’ll head to the Bronx even at 1-1. The Orioles split the season series with the Yankees and with Miguel Gonzalez, who has been pitching well, slotted for a Game 3 start, there’s no reason the Orioles can’t take two out of three in New York.

No one wants tonight to be the season’s last home game.

Although Chen, a Major League rookie this season, tailed off at the end of the season, he’s had a very solid campaign overall...

O’s vs. Rangers: What They’re Sayin’ in Texas

Courtesy: Baltimore Orioles Facebook page

Concerned that the Orioles finished the year with a loss? Or that our bats went cold in the final two games?

Hey, they are truly downhearted in Texas. The Rangers led their division by five games with nine left to play until the Oakland A’s literally swept the rug out from under their feet.

Let’s not forget the Rangers dropped the last two World Series. That has raised expectations in Texas and, at the same time, created a burden of inevitable disappointment.

I mean, we’re still thrilled just to make the playoffs after a decade-and-a-half drought. Right? The only question tonight in Baltimore is what neighborhood and which bar to watch and cheer. Game time is 8:30 p.m.

We all know by now that the numbers aren’t on our side: Joe Saunders, our starting pitcher, has never beaten the Rangers in Texas, getting shellacked while posting a 9.36 ERA.

Ranger starter Yu Darvish, on the other hand, is 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA since mid-August. And the O’s have never faced...

7- Eleven: Free Coffee and a Presidential Poll

Courtesy: 7-Eleven's Facebook page

So you have about a half-hour left if you’re just reading about this now, but 7-Eleven is offering free coffee this morning until 10 a.m.

They’re also offering you a chance to vote. Kinda. Java drinkers can pick either a 20-ounce, blue “Barack Obama” coffee cup or a red “Mitt Romney” cup, casting an informal coffee vote for the November U.S. presidential election.

According to 7-Eleven, “coffee cup-voters” have successfully predicted the winner in each of the last two presidential elections. You will be able to find this year's results later here.

At Baltimore magazine, we try to stay above the fray and brew our own coffee. But we are looking forward to hearing the results…

Presenting: The Miss Mobtown Greaseball Pinup Contest

Credit: Ron Cassie

Classic cars, Rockabilly bands, a vintage swap meet, tattoo art shows and a pinup contest — what's not to love about the annual Mobtown Greaseball?

Presented by Charm City's Karb Kings Car Club and benefitting the Baltimore Zoo, the 15th annual event attracted some 600 cars this year outside the Dundalk Moose Lodge Saturday afternoon. Inside the lodge, the music and swing dancing continued late into the night.

Somehow this long-running, quintessential Baltimore car culture festival still flies under the radar, but it's one-of-a-kind. Keep an eye out next September.

O's Go Global

Two days ago, my brother-in-law, on his way to Singapore, stood in disbelief before a big screen TV inside the Jakarta airport. It wasn't broadcasting world news, economic updates, or info about Indonesian tourist spots. Instead, it was showing the Orioles/Mariners game, live. "And this is not a baseball country at all," he emailed. "This is as unbelievable as the O's themselves! We've gone global!" And the O's won, again.

Even the Orioles cap is winning

Last year at this time, Orioles gear was the 20th most popular in the majors.

This month, according to ESPN, they have the third bestselling merch in baseball, behind only the New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants.

Their stellar play and feel good story is obvioulsy a huge factor. (Did you see that game last night? No? Me neither. Sooooo sleepy. But holy $#!@!—that's 14 straight extra inning wins!)

But there's another contributing factor: Our gear is AWESOME.

It really was just a matter of time before the Orioles brass woke up and noticed that the fans vastly preferred the adorable three-tone cartoon bird cap over the serious "ornithologically correct" bird logo. ("We're ornithologically correct!" is hardly a great rallying cry.) So the fact that the Orioles went all-cartoon-bird-all-the-time this year was inevitably going to boost sales.

City Makes Plans to Pave Patterson Park

Courtesy Facebook: Patterson Park- Help Stop The Paving Of Our Beautiful Park

In a letter to constituents posted on the Friends of Patterson Park website, Councilman Jim Kraft says the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks has proposed building a paved “loop” road through Patterson Park and 96 new parking spaces.

Kraft says that at a Sept. 12 meeting attended by Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot and William Vondrasek, the acting Director of Recreation and Parks, he received a copy of a drawing entitled “Patterson Park Parking Study.”

“This is not a ‘parking study,’” writes Kraft, adding that he is opposed to the proposal. “It is a proposal by the DRP…”

Reaction against the plan to build a loop road and new parking areas, thereby increasing automobile traffic in the park, has generated a strong reaction from local residents. A recently launched Facebook page, “...

Baltimore and Philadelphia: Tale of Two Quarterbacks

Courtesy: Wikipedia

Much of the football talk up and down I-95 this week revolves around Joe Flacco and Michael Vick, and the different directions their careers appear to be headed.

Vick, who returned to the game with a splash in 2010 after serving time on dog fighting-related charges, is coming off a mediocre season last year and a four-interception performance in last week’s season opener against the Cleveland Browns. To be fair, Vick did rally the Eagles for a late-game win, 17-16.

However, Vick’s 32 now, and some wonder if his incredible athleticism has waned a bit.

Flacco, on the other hand, earned rave reviews after masterfully directing the Ravens' new no-huddle offense in a 44-13 romp over the Bengals. Completing 21 of 29 passes for two touchdowns and 299 yards, suddenly NFL observers believe he might be one of the elite quarterbacks in the league — as he said so himself last year.

The trip to Philly for the 1 p.m. Sunday...
