The Orioles are still in playoff contention after this week, moving to 2 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for an American League Wild Card Spot. Though we suffered some minor injuries (Miguel Gonzalez and Nate McLouth), we have a lot to be thankful for—not only did Crush Davis hit his 50th home run on Friday night, but this red-hot DH keeps delivering.
Stud of the Week for September 9-15:
Since August 4th, Valencia has clocked 26 hits, 13 RBIs, and four home runs for an average of .491 (26 for 53) in that period.
Though we lost Thursday night's game to the New York Yankees, a bright spot was Valencia's three-run homer in the eighth inning. Though the right-handed DH has mostly been used against left-handers, his homer came against righty David Robertson—showing Valencia's range.
On Sunday against the Blue Jays, Valencia helped the O's win the series by doubling in two runs in the third, putting the O's up 2-1. Plus, we admire his tenacity: "My at-bat before that, I left two on in the same situation, so it was nice to come through and get those runs," Valencia said. "There's a lot of fight in here."
