This week was a tough call: Hard not to give stud honors to Scott Feldman, who pitched a complete game, 5-hit shutout against the White Sox on Friday. We salute you, Scott.
But we’re going to go with the other half of the battery, Matt Wieters, who, of course, called that game and, the next day, had one of the most clutch hits of the season.
Orioles Stud of the week for Sept. 2-9: Matt Wieters
The line: Wieters hit two home-runs this week, had the aforementioned clutch single, and is batting .333 over his last 7 games.
Studliest moment: When the White Sox’s Conor Gillaspie hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the 10th in Saturday’s game, Orioles Nation was deflated. The bottom of the 10th was shaping up promisingly—two men on—but the Os were down to their last out. That’s when Wieters smacked a single to right, the Os won 4-3, and there was joy in Mudville (okay, Charm City).
The clincher: Catching is the most grueling of positions. (You try squatting for 3 hours plus.) Most catchers begin to fade toward the end of the season. Not so for Matt Wieters, who has slugged 7 home runs since August and whose average has ballooned to .321 in the month of September. Studly!
