Football Fever

For the third time in four years, M&T Bank Stadium will play host to some of the most talented footballers in the world, hosting an exhibition match between Barclays Premier League clubs Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur on July 28.

This preseason bout between two European heavyweights will feature some of the finest players the game has to offer, including Liverpool’s Steven Gerard and Tottenham’s Emmanuel Abedayor—the league’s fourth-highest scorer last season.

Tottenham finished fourth in the league this past season, which ended in early May, with a record of 20-9-9. Liverpool finished eighth out of the 20 teams at 14-14-10. The two teams played each other twice during that time, resulting in a 4-0 Tottenham win and a 0-0 tie.

“It’s unusual to get two Premier League teams playing a match in the United States. . . . It’s something that we tried to do before, and it didn’t happen,” Ravens President Dick Cass told The Baltimore Sun earlier this year. “It’s really going to be great for the city.”

In 2009, M&T Bank Stadium saw a sell-out crowd of 72,000 for a match between A.C. Milan and Chelsea. We will once again have the rare opportunity to get loud and watch some of the world’s best athletes play the world’s most popular sport right here in Charm City.
