On a Mission

Grocer focuses on fresh, sustainable foods.

Being seasonal and sustainable is paramount at Milk & Honey Market, a new specialty food shop in Mt. Vernon (816 Cathedral St., 410-685-6455). From the street, vast windows offer a glimpse at wooden crates, pictured, holding apples from local farms alongside baskets of garlic and onions. Inside, you’ll find gourmet staples like dried pastas, olive oils, and canned tomatoes, as well as local eggs, meats, and, yes, milk and honey. Like its sister store in Philadelphia, this location has an artisanal cheese case, which holds creamy goodness from Brie to blue, and a selection of deli meats and pâtés. Open daily, Milk & Honey offers breakfast and lunch, with soups (like roasted eggplant and miso or Creole black-eyed pea), freshly made sandwiches ($6.50-7.50, with two vegan options), Rainforest Alliance-certified La Colombe coffee, and pastries, including a gooey pan au chocolat from Stone Mill Bakery. If you’re in the mood, a cozy seating area is available. But when you’re finished, make sure to sort your trash: Milk & Honey is working with a service to compost all their waste.
