Personal Training

Fitness studios can offer a more intimate atmosphere to stay fit.

Sweat Performance: Owner Kyle Jakobe, a certified strength-and-conditioning coach, has trained professional athletes like Torrey Smith, Ray Rice, Ben Grubbs, and Juan Dixon, as well as national high-school and college athletes. The focus of this Timonium facility is to increase not just athletic performance but daily fitness through strength and cardio exercises like running, weight lifting, and agility drills. 2236 Greenspring Dr., Timonium, 410-453-0022.

CrossFit: A program that focuses on 10 aspects of fitness by using various sets of movements. One or more coaches directs the high-intensity, one-hour class, taking participants through four sequences, starting with a warm-up and ending with a cool-down/stretching period. Varying from location to location, the main workout can range from intro to competitor level. Several locations including 1500 Thames St., Ste. A, 240-205-2699.

Sanctuary BodyWorks: Located in what was once St. Stanislaus Church in Fells Point, this private studio was designed to offer multiple disciplines (personal training, Rolfing, equipment Pilates) and group classes at the same time, while still providing privacy for each client. Owner Brandon Hallock, pictured, believes in creating habits to undo the collapsing spinal effect of your (sedentary) lifestyle due to occupational stresses, time, and gravity in order to increase natural balance and length. 710 S. Ann St., 443-438-3566.

Pop Physique: About four years ago, California-based husband and wife team Deric and Jennifer Williams opened a fun and stylish barre studio. Recently the vision and brand has made its way to Mt. Vernon with this licensed location offering 25 classes a week using ballet-barre exercises with light weights and isometric movements to tone and shape. Music sets the tone during class, using softer sounds for stretching and livelier beats to increase movement. 339 N. Charles St., 410-468-0767.

INLINE: Founder Josh Kirk provides the attention of personal trainers who utilize Pilates equipment and resistance training to help lengthen and tone. The practice specializes in postural enhancement; glute, upper thigh, and arm toning; runner realignment; and weight-loss training. A separate location offers group classes like mat Pilates, yoga, and children’s programs. Private Training, 2318 Boston St., 410-522-0562. Group Fitness, 720 S. Montford Ave., 410-913-8163.
