Homemade Doggie Treats

Makes: 24 bars

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 melted bacon fat
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup cold water

 Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl.
  • Mix by hand until dough forms.
  • If dough is too sticky, add more flour, and more bacon fat or water if dough is too stiff.
  • Roll out onto a floured surface, the thickness of about 1/2”.
  • Cut into 1X4” bars and place onto cookie sheet.
  • Poke divots into the bars and bake in a preheated oven for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Turn the oven off, flip the bars, and place back in the oven to cool.
  • Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature.

 

Izzy’s Apple-Cheddar Dog Biscuits

Makes: 16 bars

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups barley flour
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oatmeal
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheddar
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

 Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Line a baking sheet with a nonstick baking mat or parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mix all ingredients together along with 3 tablespoons of water to form dough.
  • Roll out mixture between two sheets of plastic wrap to 1/4-inch thick.
  • Remove plastic and cut out biscuits with a 3 1/2-inch cookie cutter.
  • Space biscuits 1-inch apart on baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned and firm.
  • Place biscuits on a cooling rack in the oven (once turned off) and leave in overnight.
  • Store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.

 

Organic Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp organic, gluten free baking powder (can substitute with regular powder if your dog isn’t on a special diet).
  • 1 cup of chunky or smooth organic peanut butter.
  • 1 cup organic milk.

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • In a mixing bowl, combing flour and baking powder. In separate bowl, combine peanut butter, milk, and mix.
  • When peanut butter mixture is smooth, add in your dry ingredients.
  • Place dough on a floured surface and knead.
  • Roll dough into 1/4-inch thick sheet and cut with cookie cutters.
  • On a lightly greased baking sheet, place in oven for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Cook, then store in airtight container.
