Thank you to everyone who entered our online dining contest. It was not an easy decision, but after narrowing down the field (and with help from managing editor Max Weiss), I came up with three winners, who, with a guest, will join me for a restaurant review.
Please read their winning entries as well as several reviews by runners-up on our Baltimore magazine website. I think you’ll be impressed.
I’m excited to meet the winners—Julie Callas, Thea Canlas, and Erin Ouslander. Let me introduce them:
Julie Callas, who reviewed The Milton Inn Lounge, is a busy mom of three, who lives in Baldwin. She also is a sales rep for a school fund-raising company and co-owns Foliage Interiors Inc. with her husband Bill. And she writes poetry.
Julie also has a sense of humor. “I married a man whose heritage is Greek,” she wrote in an e-mail. “I found out early in my marriage that spanakopita is easy to make. You just need a bottle of wine and a lot of patience.”
Thea Canlas, who reviewed Mekong Delta, is a 27-year-old artist/graphic designer/fashion designer who lives in the Lake Evesham area of north Baltimore. She grew up in the Philippines, moved to Texas for most of her life, and then came to Baltimore in 2002 for college.
She decided to stay here after she graduated. Her favorite food memories are “my grandmother’s life-changing pork belly barbecue with roasted eggplant sauce or a silky gazpacho from southern Spain,” she says. Thea has been cooking since she was four years old.
Erin Ouslander, who reviewed Jennings Cafe in Catonsville, lives in Catonsville, too. She’s a graphic designer at UMBC and is a creative food enthusiast to the core.
“I think my background in art gives me a unique perspective on food and dining,” she says. “I sometimes like to think of food as consumable art (and many of my personal art projects feature food in some way—I once baked a series of family photographs into a loaf of bread).”
Erin readily admits, “I could go on and on about food and eating and cooking!”
Congratulations, ladies. I hope to have another contest soon.
