Chef Mac’s opens in The Parkside space

Chef Mac’s Louisiana Cuisine and All That Blues is now up and running in Lauraville. While the rest of us were holiday shopping, chef/owner Maclonza Lee held a grand opening on Dec. 3 and has quietly been entertaining guests since then.

The restaurant—previously located in a smaller storefront down the street on Harford Road—took over the spot once occupied by the now closed Parkside Fine Food & Spirits. Chef Mac, a native of Alexandria, LA, is whipping up his home state’s native cuisine, including chunky gumbos and Creole dishes.

On the menu, you’ll find appetizers like fried crawfish (as they’re known in Louisiana) tails and shrimp rémoulade, sandwiches like a fried oyster po’ boy and a Cajun pork roast, and specialties including seafood gumbo and fried catfish.Except for a $20 stuffed blackened salmon. most entrees are $14.

I stopped by for lunch today and can vouch for the amazing jambalaya with fat shrimp, chicken, and andouille sausage. Also, don’t miss the zydeco bread, which comes with a spicy cheesy sauce with beans, andouille, and shrimp. The friendly chef stopped by our table a few times to see how we liked the food.

The dining room was quiet this afternoon—as in my friends and I were the only ones there. But it is a holiday week, and Chef Mac is gearing up for a New Year’s Eve bash. The evening features a BYOB Louisiana-style buffet and the music of the Mary Shaver Band, all for $30 a person.

I wasn’t able to take any photos without attracting attention, but the space is similar to The Parkside. The biggest changes are a stage for music, where the kids’ area used to be, and the wall color, which is now a deep mauve.

More on Chef Mac’s and the food in our March issue.
