This weekend: Flaco for the Super Bowl

flaco wineOkay, not Joe Flacco, the Ravens quarterback. I’m talking about Flaco the wine. I discovered this luscious, fruity wine made with Spain’s signature Tempranillo grape recently at Crackpot Liquors in Towson. It’s a bargain at $7.99 a bottle.

It’s a fresh, unoaked red that is fine on its own with any Super Bowl snacks, but it’s also a great ingredient for Sangria if you’re hosting a crowd to watch the game. There’s even a recipe on the back of the bottle that says it only takes five minutes to prepare. (They must chop fruit fast!)

Flaco Sangria

1 bottle Flaco Tempranillo (750 ml)
2 each: oranges, apples, pears, and/or bananas, cut into wedges
5 tablespoons sugar
Splash orange juice or lemonade
750 ml orange soda or ginger ale
2 shots Triple Sec or rum (optional)

Combine wine, fruit, sugar, and juice or lemonade in a large container, and let sit for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator to allow flavors to blend. Add ice, orange soda or ginger ale and Triple Sec or rum, if using, just before serving.
