If you make a great grilled-cheese sandwich, Mt. Washington Tavern is looking for you. To celebrate National Grilled Cheese Month (who knew?), the restaurant is hosting its first Grilled Cheese Sandwich Cook-Off on April 10.
Home cooks are asked to submit their grilled-cheese recipes by April 1. Check here for rules and details. Three contestants will be chosen to participate in the Sunday afternoon event from 2-4 p.m.
There will also be six professional chefs competing in a separate cook-off. So far, Patrick “Opie” Crooks of Roy’s, Bill Crouse of Sláinte, Chad Gauss of City Cafe, and Matt Milani of The Rumor Mill have agreed to be part of the challenge.
The public—you can attend for $10; kids 10 and younger are free—and a panel of judges (disclosure: I’m one of them) will rate the sandwiches for cash prizes ranging from $100-700. Categories include: Best Professional, Best Home Cook, Crowd Pleaser, and Kid’s Choice.
In addition to tasting the sandwiches, attendees of age will be able to enjoy a special cocktail created by the Tavern’s bartenders.
Proceeds from the admission cost benefit Moveable Feast, which provides nourishment to people with HIV/AIDS and breast cancer.
