Te Amo, the new piano/tapas bar in Canton, has a romantic back story. I'll be reviewing the restaurant in our July issue, but I wanted to share the origins of its name and how the restaurant came to be. It's sweet.
Te Amo's owner Steve Heintzelman grew up in Catonsville but eventually landed in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as the owner of Chance Bar and Grill. Over the years, he wondered what happened to a wonderful girl he dated 25 years ago.
For the past five years, he's been searching for her, and, thanks to social media, found her on Facebook last July. She was living in Colorado and flew to Myrtle Beach to become reacquainted.
Steve and Bethann are now man and wife and soon began searching for a new venture. When a business broker contacted the couple about a restaurant space in Canton, they came to Baltimore, took a look, and were hooked.
Te Amo opened March 1. But the name—which means "I Love You" in Spanish—didn't necessarily come from their love story. As it happens, Steve is a cigar smoker and prefers a Mexcian brand called ... Te Amo. Bethann thought it was the perfect name for their new place.
