It's official. Phillips Seafood will be relocating to the former ESPN Zone spot at Power Plant by the end of the year. Its lease at Harborplace ends Sept. 30 as I reported in an earlier post.
The exciting news is that the barge in front of the old ESPN Zone will become an outdoor crab deck, "the old-fashioned Baltimore way," said David Cordish, CEO of The Cordish Cos., which oversees the Power Plant complex of restaurants and entertainment venues.
Cordish, along with Steve Phillips, president and CEO of Phillips Seafood Restaurants, were seated at a table on the barge this morning with steamed crabs, corn on the cob, pitchers of beer, and cans of Phillips seafood seasoning.
"That's why we're here today, to eat crabs," Cordish said.
And to confirm the rumor that had been widespread for weeks—that Phillips was moving to Power Plant.
Keeping the restaurant in Baltimore will mean 600 jobs, said Christian Johansson, Maryland secretary of business and economic development, who also spoke at the press conference.
David Cordish also paid respect to two men who would have appreciated the joint efforts of the Cordish and Phillips families—the recently deceased Bryce Phillips and William Donald Schaefer.
"Two people would be smiling at this," Cordish said of the Phillips founder and the former mayor and governor. "They would be happy to see this union of family."
