Dining in the Dark

dining in the darkExperience a novel restaurant concept and also help a good cause at a benefit for the Foundation Fighting Blindness on June 14 at the Hilton Baltimore. Guests will dine in the dark for about 30 minutes to experience the challenges of being blind.

They will be guided through the culinary experience by visually impaired servers, who have been specially trained and will share their stories.

While this dinner is being held to raise awareness for sight-saving research, "eating in the dark" is actually done in some restaurants in Europe and the U.S., with the purpose of increasing the use of the other senses. The waiters wear night goggles to serve the food.

Also, at the Foundation Fighting Blindness event, former Gov. Bob Ehrlich and former Ravens kicker Matt Stover will be honored with the foundation's Visionary Award.

For more information and tickets, visit the foundation's website.

Green Onion/second Clementine open

winston blickWinston Blick of Clementine restaurant introduced Green Onion, his greengrocer market, or "bodega" as he calls it, this afternoon after a two-year wait while the building was being restored. And this evening, he will be opening Clementine at the Creative Alliance, a smaller version of his Hamilton restaurant.

"It's very daunting," said Winston, pictured at Green Onion, who owns the restaurants and market with his wife Cristin Dadant. They opened the original Clementine four years ago, eventually expanding the space to accommodate the crowds.

Now, Winston will be concentrating more on the business side of these ventures. To accomplish that, he put Jill Snyder, recently of Woodberry Kitchen and a former Top Chef contestant, in the kitchen at Clementine, and Jeremy Price, Clementine's sous chef, at the helm of the Creative Alliance restaurant, a cozy 49 seater in Highlandtown.

Winston describes the food at the new restaurant as "a little more fancy and smaller plates" than what's offered in Hamilton. But diners can expect the same quality of food. His former sous chef knows his "food philosophy," Winston said.

Green OnionAt the market, Winston brought on longtime friend and restaurant buddy Bill DeBloom as the manager. James Wilson, who formerly worked at Ceriello in Belvedere Square, is the resident butcher.

Today, the men were stocking shelves and produce bins, filling the meat and cheese cases, and prepping for customers. The market has a rustic, old-fashioned feel with its weathered wood and tile floor, but is filled with modern-day goods, many of them local.

Here are a few: Prigel's ice cream and milk, Andy's eggs, Zeke's coffee (a special Green Onion blend), Hamilton Bakery bread, Rumbleway Farm chickens, Cedar Hill cheeses, and much more.

There are also products from other areas of the country, like corn from Florida and hot-house tomatoes from Pennsylvania. "But they're fantastic," Winston said.

As the store gets established, Winston also plans to offer prepared foods. And his chef Jill will be holding cooking classes there.

"We're going to be making a lot of our own inventory," Winston said. "We'll be making our own salsa and Green Goddess dressing."

The future sounds bright for Green Onion—and its shoppers.

Prepping for the Foodie Experience

andrew zimmernIt's almost here. The third Foodie Experience at the Hippodrome Theatre happens Saturday. There's still time to get tickets.

Andrew Zimmern, pictured, who recently won a James Beard Award for his Bizarre Foods show on the Travel Channel, will be the guest speaker. He's on a national tour, and if you'd like to find out what he told foodrepublic.com after his appearance at the Austin Food and Wine Festival, you can watch the video here.

I don't know if he'll cover the same topics: Anthony Bourdain and No Reservations, baseball (not the O's), and bizarre foods, of course, but it's worth checking out.

Zimmern will go on stage at 6 p.m. tomorrow. Before that, dozens of Baltimore's top restaurants and food trucks will be feeding ticket holders, starting at 3 p.m.

The weather should be gorgeous for this food fest. Wear expandable clothing or your fat jeans. I plan to. See you there.

What happened to chef Mark Littleton?

After a short cooking stint at Bistro Rx, chef Mark Littleton, who spent several years turning out terrific fare at Annabel Lee's Tavern, seemed to disappear—until today when I got a call from him.

He's been busy planning his own restaurant in the space occupied by Crossroads Bar and Grill at the corner of Foster and Highland avenues in Canton. He'll be gaining possession of the property next week and hopes to have his restaurant, Adam's Eve, operating by the end of June.

"We're going to redo the entire place," said Mark, who is partnering with his fiancée Cheryl Gavoni on the project. "It will be a completely new venue."

The restaurant is named after Cheryl's son Adam, who died last year.

Mark described the food at Adam's Eve as New American, "farm to table as much as possible." He promises brand-new recipes and ideas from the kitchen.

Mark, who also received accolades as the chef at the defunct Lulu's Off Broadway, credits Annabel Lee's owner Kurt Bragunier with giving him the experience to open his own place. "If it hadn't been for Annabel Lee's, I wouldn't have had the knowledge," he said. "I would not have had the courage."

Sanders' Corner's porch is back

sanders corner signsThe new restaurant at Sanders' Corner, McFaul's IronHorse Tavern, is planning to open the first weekend in June, co-owner Walter Lashno said today. The porch, pictured below, will now include an outdoor bar as well as 72 prized dining seats.

It's a lovely place to enjoy the warm weather since the elevated deck overlooks the lush Loch Raven Reservoir. The restaurant's interior will be really nice, too.

The restaurant was gutted, Walt said, and everything is shiny and state-of-the art. The new owners haven't discarded the buildings' storied past as an ice-cream store and popular breakfast spot, though. They've kept much of the memorabilia, he said.

The name "IronHorse" also reflects the train that used to chug by across the street. The restaurant, at the corner of Cromwell Bridge Road and Loch Raven Drive, will have three dining rooms: the Baltimore Room, Loch Raven Room, and Fireplace Room, with appropriate decor.

sanders corner porchThe indoor bar will include a raw bar at one end. The executive chef is Evan Orser, who previously worked at Looney's Pub in Bel Air and The Harp in Perry Hall, according to belair.patch.com.

The menu will feature traditional Maryland cuisine, Walt said, with local crab cakes, rockfish, an a la carte oyster bar, and other products from nearby farms, including Prigel ice cream and Boordy wines.

I can't wait to sit on the porch.

Artifact Coffee to open in June

Spike Gjerde's coffee shop, Artifact Coffee, is scheduled to open next month, though the exact date hasn't been announced yet. Spike, chef/owner of Woodberry Kitchen is partnering with Woodberry's head barista Allie Caran on the project.

Just as Woodberry relies on local, seasonal ingredients, Artifact will also feature food and beverages that are local and made-to-order. While coffee is the focus, the shop will feature a menu that targets the time of day—morning kitchen, day kitchen, and night kitchen—with appropriate foods, all priced under $15, for each time frame.

Allie, who holds coffee cuppings every Friday at Woodberry, will continue the cuppings at Artifact when it opens. She works in conjunction with Counter Culture Coffee and plans to serve seasonal, direct trade coffee at the restaurant.

Artifact is located in the redeveloped Union Mill building in the Hampden area.

Greek restaurant to be Ouzo Bay

Greek restaurantThe new restaurant Ouzo Bay in Harbor East is scheduled to open in early summer. I personally am glad to hear that news because my office is only a few floors above the construction, pictured, at the corner of Central and Lancaster streets. The building is also home to Charleston restaurant at the other end.

The new restaurant will focus on traditional Old World favorites with a modern take on Greek cuisine. The menu will feature fresh fish flown in from the Mediterranean, grass-fed lamb and beef, and homemade Greek favorites. There will also be a substantial collection of Greek wines and liquors from various regions of the homeland.

With the constant jackhammering, dust, and debris, I may need ouzo long before the restaurant opens.

Mo's Towson is now open

mo's crabcakeIt took a while, but Mo's Seafood in Towson finally opened on Tuesday. I stopped by today to see how it looked—and to sample the "Famous Jumbo Lump Crab Cake," pictured, which turned out to be a nine-ounce mound of Baltimore goodness.

The interior is pleasant and inviting, too, with wood floors and tables, pale gray walls, comfortable silver chairs, and a handsome bar. There's also an outdoor deck, pictured, where steamed crabs will be served. My waitress said today that the restaurant isn't serving crabs just yet.

Local diners may remember when the building was the Orchard Inn, a classy, special-occasion restaurant, whose charming host Hersh Pacino greeted guests by name and where Sammy Davis Jr. and other celebs dropped by when they were in town.

After the restaurant closed in 1997, it went through a few other renditions before Mo's took over the space in 2009. Mo's has five other locations around town.

mo's deckAt this newest Mo's on East Joppa Road, there is already a busy lunchtime trade going on with sit-down diners and people picking up carryout. There's a big parking lot, but once word gets out, it may be hard to find a spot whether you're there for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch.
