Now I can tell you

Ryleigh’s Oyster has taken over Junior’s Wine Bar in Federal Hill. It’s a done deal, says Brian McComas, a partner in a new restaurant group. I found out about the buyout a few weeks ago, but Brian asked me to wait on the announcement until all the papers had been signed. Given the state of the economy, I honored Brian’s request. I certainly didn’t want to jeopardize the transition just for a so-called “scoop.” Brian also wanted to let Junior’s end “gracefully.”

The new restaurant will be called Taverna Corvino and will feature the cooking skills of Chris Paternotte, formerly of the now-closed VIN in Towson. After VIN, Chris was in the kitchen at the new Abbey Burger Bistro. He’ll still be involved there as a consultant to tweak the menu, says Russ Miller, the manager/owner of the place.

Corvino, which means “raven black,” will have an Italian influence, says Brian. The opening should be in a few weeks, once the signage is finished.

Also, another restaurant is in the works by the same Fed Hill restaurant group—Avery’s Pearl. No, it’s not centering on seafood. It’s playing off the word “pearl” as precious and choice, says Brian, and will feature “land” foods like beef, venison, great cheeses, charcuterie, and a classy wine cellar. Look for that to open in March or April. Oh, yes, Ryleigh and Avery are Brian’s daughters.
