Your favorite crab cakes
I need your help! I’m working on a roundup of the Baltimore area’s best crab cakes for our July issue and would really like your recommendations. Please let me know your suggestions by posting a comment or e-mailing me at lsuzanne@baltimoremagazine.net.
I think it's wonderful that we have so many great versions. When I was living in the Midwest, I felt so deprived, as you can imagine any native Baltimorean would. Chefs would list “Maryland crab cake” on their menus and I’d torture myself with one disappointing crab cake after another. There’s just no place like home.
So, here’s your chance to speak out. I want to make sure I cover as many good crab cakes as I can—and, no, the restaurants don’t have to advertise with the magazine. Thanks for your input.

You're a brave woman for taking on such a controversial topic, Suzanne!
My favorite traditional is from Snyders Restaurant off 695. Great lump meat that never disappoints. As of late, though, I've really enjoyed the crab cake at Jack's Bistro in Canton. Made with dijon horseradish sauce, the cake is definitely a little more creative, but incredibly delicious.
I've always enjoyed the crab cakes at Duda's in Fells Point... until I tasted the crab cakes at Hull St. Blues. Normally I don't like any 'accessorizing' of my crab cake but the ones at Hull St. Blues came with a "Three Mustard Aoili" sauce that took them over the bar set by Duda's. Worth the trip to 'the other side of the harbor' for those crab cakes and if you go on Tuesday nights, they're only $12!
The rib and reef in Timonium has the best I have ever had. Huge lump, perfect consistency. The atmosphere isn't much, but the crab cake makes up for literally anything.
Ok - so you guys prolly have never had the crabcakes at BlueStone in Timonium. I take every person I know who's never had a bmore crab cake there and it is BY FAR the best I've ever had. They don't advertise it like a lot of places, and they don't brag because word of mouth is enough. No filler - all lump crab meat. DELICIOUS. And I've had a good share of MD crabcakes.. nothing compares.
I grew up in Baltimore and now live in NYC. I go home often to visit family and friends and crab cakes are a year round must.
For carry out we hit Captain Treys in Cockeysville.
For casual dining and great atmosphere i hit McCabes in Hamden. They have delicious crab cakes (and ribs)
another great casual place (really casual) is corner stable in cockeysville.
and for something a little more formal and a little more pricey - you can't go wrong with Michael's in timonium.
Taneytown Tavern has a great crabcake. All jumbo lump with no filler and very good spicing. Well worth the drive to Taneytown.
