The Orioles dropped a pair of games last week to Seattle and appeared to be struggling with eight dates remaining on the team's West Coast swing. No worries. Our San Diego-born star centerfielder came to the rescue with a big series in his hometown and hasn't looked back since.
Stud of the Week for Aug. 5-Aug.12:
Jones went 4-for-4, including a homer, in the first game in San Diego, and then added three more hits the following day to lead the O's to a 2-game sweep. Over the past week, he's leading all regulars with a white-hot .571 batting average.
After doubling in the 8th inning to drive in a run yesterday, Jones ripped a line-drive over the leftfield wall, knocking in Manny Machado and Nick Markasis to finish off San Francisco. The O's took two of three from the defending World Series champs and are now 4.5 games out of the American League East lead.
The O's are the kind of team that doesn't start any crap, but doesn't take any either. Which we like. And that's because of guys like Jones, who play hard, but are loose and don't seem to take themselves too seriously off the field. After Sunday's game, Jones tweeted that someone in the bleachers threw a banana at him and blasted the fan. Frustrated by the social media response, Jones suggested it might be time to beg off Twitter, before later sending out a light-hearted message about his tamale dinner. We're glad Jones appears to have changed his mind about getting off social media because the 28-year-old is almost as much fun off the field as on.
