Homemade: DIY Gift Recipe

Be creative with DIY gifts: learn how to make Biggs & Featherbelle's Brown Sugar Scrub

Just in time for the holidays, homemade beauty products are currently trending. “People are really going back to handmade things,” says Biggs & Featherbelle’s Kelly Evick, pictured right, who along with her sister, Kasey, sells a line of soaps, soaks, and scrubs available at Whole Foods and Wegmans. “We are seeing this trend in the farm-to-table movement, and that follows suit with body care, too.” Firebird Bath & Body’s Brooke Marton, who sells her line of lip balms and lotions through online market Etsy and firebirdbathbody.com, says ’tis the season to give something homemade whether you’re playing mini-Martha Stewart or buying from a DIY expert. “Homemade gifts are especially nice around the holidays when people tend to get sentimental,” says Marton. “When you buy a gift at the store, people don’t see the time and thought that went into making it.” Part of the popularity of the trend is also due to growing consumer concern with wellness. “People are health conscious about what goes into their products,” Marton says. “When you make your own products you can make sure you are using only high-quality ingredients or leave something out if you are allergic. It’s infinitely flexible.”
