Annapolis Towne Centre

On Thursday, I braved the icky weather to head down 97 and hit the new Annapolis Towne Centre. There are still lots of shops not open yet (including Urban Chic), but if you can stand the construction noise while you shop—it's still worth the trip.

I could spend hours at Anthropologie. The displays are insanely gorgeous and clever and even though I didn't buy them I was fawning over the Eat Local dessert plates and monogrammed cuffs. I also loved the...

art_market_logoartworks.jpg

Another great chance to support local artists: Wednesday, December 10th—Saturday December 13th from 10-6 in Brown Center's Leidy Atrium and Falvey Hall lobby, 1301 Mount Royal Ave. The handmade gifts by MICA students, faculty and staff include illustrations, paintings, prints, posters, sculptures, mosaics, stationery, tees, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, toys and wrapping paper.

The best part? Talking one-on-one with the artists about their work. And perhaps discovering the next big ...

It's A Wrap

Just spotted this on the Baltimore Etsy Street Team blog (http://baltimore-etsy.blogspot.com)—Sweet Pepita's Shannon Delanoy is hosting a workshop this Friday at bluehouse (1407 Fleet St., 410-276-1180) teaching eco-friendly ways to wrap gifts using repurposed fabric and paper. Shannon is a pro at recycling, her line blends 100-percent organic cotton with thrifted tees to create new shirts and dresses. The workshop will run from 7-8 PM .

Holiday Windows

Last week I bundled up and spent a few hours in Federal Hill judging window displays for the Yulefest. There were some really beautiful windows but we finally selected our top three. So, if you get a chance next time you're in the neighborhood check out:

Best Overall: Love Allie (she made the sweetest wrapping paper dresses!) www.loveallieboutique.com

Best Holiday Theme: Alexandra Webb Artisan Jewelry (she had a gorgeous winter wonderland theme) www.alexandrawebbjewelry.com

Most Creative: Funky Beehive (very fun candy row houses) www.funkybeehive.com

It was so much fun and took me back to my childhood. Almost every December around the holidays we'd head to NYC to see a play—and check out all the amazing window displays at Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barney's, etc.

Shop Local

Squidfire

If you enjoyed our December Shop Local feature (50-plus crafters who are making amazing stuff in Charm City) ... there are two great holiday shows on Sunday. I'm going to try and hit both. It's a great way to find unique gifts while supporting the locals.

*Merry Mart at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson. On Sunday, December 7th, 11am-5pm. Over thirty handpicked artists sell some the best of Baltimore-made items. Gorgeous turned vessels, elegant jewelry, whimsical stuffed critters, origami lights, felt applique, hand knits, housemade soaps, wacky fly swatters, photos in jars, totally cool totes, and mucho more. Free.

*Squidfire's 2008 Winter Art Mart at the Lyric Opera House. On Sunday December 7, 12-6:30pm. A ton of vendors from up and down the East Coast—especially Baltimore. Check out a vendor list at www.squidfire.com/winter-art-mart-squidfire.cfm

Let's Talk Shop

Well, hello. I've finally come up for air after a very busy few months (Bride, November Entertaining Guide, Gift Guide, December's Made in Baltimore feature) and realized it was finally time to start blogging. I'm hoping my blog will be a mixture of both shop news (new boutiques, sales, must have merchandise) and some inside information about shopping in Charm City (shop owner interviews, local shopping guides, Top 10 lists.) But the real question is—what do you want to hear about? What are your thoughts on retailers in Baltimore? What shops would you like to see in the city/county? I'll try to post as often as I can.

And here's a little background on me: I grew up in Frederick, Maryland back when it was more cows than Starbucks. I attended the University of Maryland’s College of Journalism and was active with the school’s daily newspaper the Diamondback. After graduation, I took an internship with Washingtonian magazine before landing a job at the Washington Post. I spent almost eight years at the paper, first working with the gossip column Reliable Source and Pulitzer Prize winning fashion reporter Robin Givhan before co-writing a party column called “Out & About” and later creating two...
