Annapolis’s Christian Siriano is more than just the winner of last year’s Project a, he’s his own brand. The catch phrases, the “Blue Steel” pose, the general air of fabulousness—the kid’s a natural-born salesman. (Oh yeah, and he can design a bit, too.) We caught up with Siriano at the Steps to the Cure fundraiser this October.
What book or film most changed your life?
Oh my God! People are going to think I don't read, but Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. I was obsessed with that movie growing up. Christina Applegate plays a fashion designer in the movie. That's when I knew I wanted to be a designer.
What's the best advice you ever got?
I guess the best advice would be don't ever let anything hold your personality back. Your personality is what makes you.
What's the bravest thing you've ever done?
Auditioning for Project Runway.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Amy Poehler. [Laughs]. She's fabulous. That would be really good.
What's your guilty pleasure?
Oh my God! Anything junk food. Yodels. I love Yodels. I haven't had one in a while. Actually, I want one right now.
How has life changed since you won Project Runway?
It's crazy, like every dream I've ever had come true. I definitely have a different bank account situation and that's fabulous.
Did you have any idea "fierce" would catch on like that?
No. I had no idea, I think it's crazy, hilarious. I stole it from Tyra Banks [Laughs]. She doesn't need it, she's got enough.
Who's the best famous person you've ever met?
Oh, that's so hard. You know who I met the other night? Debra Messing, and she was so fabulous. And I went to this party with Anne Hathaway the other night and she was so fabulous. So, it's a really long list, like everybody. It's pretty amazing.
Describe your design aesthetic.
I think it can be very feminine, sometimes romantic, but very strong and powerful. A bit avant-garde, but very wearable.
Is Tim Gunn as awesome as he seems?
He's fabulous. He's the most amazing person ever.
Do you ever see yourself getting a vacation home in Annapolis?
Yeah, you know that would be amazing. I would love to buy a house by the water on the bay somewhere. Yeah, I think in 10 years hopefully I'll be able to relax a little bit . . . but probably not. [Laughs]. I'll only be in my 30s!
