With spring almost upon us, what better time to turn over a new beauty leaf? To fill us in on the latest products and trends, we turned to Amie Decker of the Maryland-based Amie Decker Beauty. A longtime makeup maven and bridal beauty expert, Decker recalls her passion forming at an early age. Says Decker, “As a little girl, I remember my favorite thing to do was color in the lips of the Disney princesses.”
What do you recommend for someone who is in a style rut?
A nice way to freshen up your look is it to add a pop of color for the hair, eyes, or lips. One of the newest trends is hair chalk. It’s literally chalk you can color your hair with and comes in colors like blue, pink, and turquoise. It’s fun and fresh and washes right out. If you don’t want to do that, add color through eyeliner in shades such as turquoise or emerald green and keep everything else neutral. And if that’s too much, put something on the lip—maybe a bright red or bright pink.
What are some other spring trends?
Dewy glowing skin instead of matte is in for any age. Thicker brows and lashes and shiny hair all speak to a healthy look.
Any new products out there you’re excited about?
BB (beauty balm) creams have been big in other countries and have just comes to the States. Every cosmetic line is carrying them from Bobbi Brown, to Maybelline, and Clinique. BB creams combine all different steps of using a moisturizer, color corrector, primer, foundation, and sunscreen all in one.
If you were on a deserted island and could only take four beauty products with you, what would you take?
I couldn’t live without mascara. I use Maybelline. I love Aquaphor to keep my lips from getting dry. I would take Urban Decay’s eyeshadow primer potion in Eden. Lastly, I would take Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo. I try to give my hair a break from washing it every day.
What’s your biggest piece of beauty advice?
One of my favorite quotes, author unknown, is, “Be your own kind of beautiful.” Whatever the trends are, a woman needs to know her own comfort level. If she feels uncomfortable, she’s not going to look her best. You need to feel beautiful in your own skin to really radiate beauty. ——JM
