According to political magazine National Journal, Maryland's U.S. senators are among the most liberal in the nation. Sen. Ben Cardin tied with four other senators for the number-one slot, while Sen. Barbara Mikulski landed at number eight. Only Rhode Island—which had both of its senators tied with Cardin in the number-one slot—had a more liberal senate duo. Maryland's delegation to the House of Representatives ranked as the 6th most liberal in the country.
