Ray Rice's New 'Super' Ink

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, profiled earlier this year on the AOL web series, My Ink, recently commemorated the team's Super Bowl win with a new tattoo: an image of the Lombardi Trophy on his left bicep with the word "Champs" written across the design. Right where he'll tuck the pigskin when he runs into the end zone next year—perfect.

The photo is courtesy of Jimmy's Famous Seafood on Holabird Avenue, which hosts tons of Ravens-themed events, including weekly meet and greet dinners with players during the season.

Harbor East FashionEASTa Fashion Show Event

The 2nd Annual Harbor East FashionEASTa Fashion Show was a success—great runway show, turnout, and street style.

The theme was definitely statement pieces, while the outfits were well planned as a whole, there was always that one piece that stood out to us.

We also caught up with Jacqueline Easely, the stay-at-home- mother of three, who was making a statement with nearly every piece of her outfit. Here's what we found out about her, the outfit, and what she thinks is the "Baltimore look."

Neighborhood: Columbia, originally from Canton.

Occupation: mother and sales associate at Michael Kors.

What she's wearing: Brian Atwood shoes, gifted necklace, all other pieces Michael Kors.

The one piece she can't live without: "I'll always wear stilettos."

Shopping destinations: The Galleria, White House Black Market, Michael Kors.

What is the Baltimore Look? "Eclectic and funky, Columbia is comfortable; lot's of yoga pants and workout clothes because there are a lot of stay at home moms there."

Why she likes to dress well: "It became important to me after having my kids to express myself. My two girls always compliment me. It's not superficial to feel good about yourself."

I think we can all agree with that.

NFL Draft: Ravens Take Florida Safety; Dunbar's Austin Goes in First Round

With the departure of two beloved future Hall of Famers from their defense — linebacker Ray Lewis to retirement, safety Ed Reed to the Houston Texans — the Ravens had holes to fill at both positions during the first round of last night's NFL Draft.

With the final selection of the first round, the Ravens ultimately skipped on controversial Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o and instead took versatile, hard-hitting Florida safety Matt Elam. In reality, recently acquired safety Michael Huff, who the Ravens signed from Oakland, will take over Reed's spot at free safey and Elam will compete to replace Bernard Pollard (who the Ravens let go after the Super Bowl win) at strong safety, but the bottom line is the Ravens decided to shore up their secondary.

The other big Baltimore draft news last night was the selection of former Dunbar star Tavon Austin, by way of West Virginia University, by the St. Louis Rams with the eighth overall selection.

Considered the most dynamic offensive threat in the draft, the 5-8, 172-pound Austin, who posted a 4.34 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine, accounted for 2,910 all-purpose yards last season — the fourth most in NCAA history.

Austin set a number of Maryland state records while at Dundbar, including most points scored in a career (790), most touchdowns scored (123), and most rushing yards in a career (7,460).

Coincidentally, Elam will likely have to cover Austin on the field this season — albeit in a preseason game — Aug. 29, when the Ravens travel to St. Louis.

Pass the Torch

Leanne Hannah, a local freelance illustrator and former Towson University graduate (yay Tigers!), has collaborated with PressBox to create the official "Your Turn" Ravens/Orioles t-shirt. Hannah’s illustration shows a raven and an oriole bird giving each other a "fist-bump," implying the hope of another winning season and ultimately the championship! Symbolically speaking, the Baltimore Ravens are passing the torch to the Orioles. (No pressure!)

You can purchase the tees ($18.95) at the Pressbox store.

For over a decade, Hannah has worked on many projects including her nostalgic yet exuberant design, Blue Milk Special. This web comic (which was voted number 9 on TopWebComics) features parodies of the classic movie, Star Wars, done by her and other artists. More of her designs include comic illustration work for Whatever Happened to Baron Von Shock, Casper and the Spectrals, and Marvel Comics.

If you want to catch up on the latest work by Hannah, join her at the House of Pop Culture in Waldorf, MD on May 4th, the Baltimore Comic-Con on September 7-8th, and the ANS Sci-Fi & Comic-Con on Saturday May 11th. Check out the websites for more information.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the talented designer herself, and here's what she had to say:

What inspired you to design this piece? I know the love of the O's played a big role.

It was a love of both teams that did it, really. I wanted to do a piece like this right after the Ravens won the Super Bowl. I was so proud of the guys and how much heart they showed throughout the playoffs. I've been an Orioles fan since I was little (through the highs and the lows), and after the tremendous season they had last year, I wanted to do something to show the Ravens passing the torch in a way, and extending that momentum to the O's. These last few months have just been an awesome time to be a Baltimore sports fan!

How did you think of the concept of the fist bump?

The 'fist bump' between the birds was actually the very first part of the image that I imagined in my head, but I went back and forth over how to present it. Originally I was going to have the teams' mascots sitting together and fist bumping, but in the end I thought going with actual birds casually perched on a tree branch would be cooler and a little subtler.

I really just did the piece for fun to show my love and support for my teams. I was incredibly surprised when it took off the way it did online.

I've heard that some people were trying to sell counterfeit shirts using your design. How are you handling that?

Unfortunately, when something like this goes viral you're always going to have people out there trying to take advantage. A couple weeks ago I was told that someone had stolen my drawing of the birds, removed the tree branch and my signature, and put them on a t-shirt with the 'Your Turn' slogan. My drawing is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, so my lawyer and I are in the process of sending Cease and Desist letters to the people selling them and trying to profit from my work. Right now it looks like these shirts are primarily being sold at farmers' markets around Baltimore. We're trying to get it taken care of. I appreciate everyone who has written or let me know when and where they have seen these shirts being sold. It helps.

Do you have other designs on the horizon for other teams?

Not at this time, but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it!

If you love art like I do and bleed orange and black for the O's, then this is definitely and "win-win" situation. Let's help the Ravens pass the torch to the Orioles so Baltimore can bring home another Championship ring, while also supporting a local artist. (All smiles.)

Fashion Events That Just Got Better

The second annual FashionEASTa event just announced that one of the models walking the show will be our very own place-kicker/2013 Superbowl Champion, Justin Tucker. It’s not surprising that Tucker would be more than happy to participate in this sort of thing. Aside from his boyish good looks, he’s known to have a thing for nice clothing, suiting in particular. When interviewing him for our January Top Ten page, he told us that his custom-fit navy chalk-stripe three-piece suit (with surgeon cuffs, natch) is up there on the list of things he can't live without. To him, it's “a must-have for travel and game days.”

For those who are fans of the Kimora: House of Fab TV series on Style Network, you’ll be thrilled to learn that the stars of the show, Johnny Anastacio and Lianca Lyons, will be hosting the 2013 Fashion Awards MD. If you haven’t checked out the reality show yet, it basically follows the (more than often) drama-filled lives of Kimora Lee Simmons and her JustFab team. Anastacio, who is known as the “Drama King,” is the company’s graphic designer while Lyons, “The Kimora Whisperer,” holds the senior marketing and photo shoot manager position. Both full of energy and personality, this dynamic duo will be sure to entertain us throughout the night.

You can visit Corrine’s blog post here for more info on both events.

Party is Over: Post-Super Bowl Purge Underway

Baltimore is going through a collective anxiety attack at the moment.

Suddenly, the elation of the miracle win in Denver, the upset in New England, the victory in the Super Bowl just a few weeks ago — even the joy in recently resigning Joe Flacco — has taken a dark turn.

First, came the news that clutch wide receiver Anquan Boldin had been traded to San Francisco. Then, the news that free agent pass rusher Paul Kruger had signed with Cleveland. Okay, losing Boldin was disappointing. Losing Kruger was expected.

That's football. There's a salary cap and it's business. Fine. Everybody Facebooking and tweeting and in the office gets that. Everyone said, "Trust Ozzie."

But now, the city's football fans seem genuinely panicked.

We were supposed to keep middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, right? That's why we let Boldin and Kruger go. He was going to replace Ray Lewis. Now what? We draft the weird guy from Notre Dame and hope he's faster than his 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine?

Then today's stunner: Hard-hitting safety Bernard Pollard is released.

And, of course, there are the reports that Ed Reed has hired an agent and is testing the free agent market. Meanwhile, the only guy we have picked up is 30-year-old defensive tackle Chris Canty.

At this point, it may just be time to move on to baseball. Let go of the obsession with the Ravens until next fall. There seems to be less to worry about with the Orioles, believe it or not. And Opening Day is around the corner.

Ravens Super Bowl DVD Screening at The Lyric

Last night, Ravens players, staff, and fans gathered (fittingly) at the The Patricia and Arthur Model Performing Arts Center at The Lyric to watch a screening of the NFL Films DVD Baltimore Ravens: Super Bowl XLVII Champions, available today on the Ravens website.

Players arrived at the Lyric around 5 p.m., all pausing on the purple carpet for photos and interviews. Of course, the big elephant in the room was the news that wide receiver Anquan Boldin was traded to the San Francisco 49ers earlier in the day.

"Anquan was a great receiver for myself and for our football team for this whole organization," said Joe Flacco, who attended the event with his wife Dana. "It's sad to see a guy like that go, but at the same time you want what's best for him and you just wish him the best of luck . . . You lose a lot of things, you lose a leader, you lose that fire. Most importantly, you lose a really good player and a guy that's done it over and over again."

Defensive end Arthur Jones, who was all smiles for the camera, had more of a positive spin on the situation. "It's really unfortunate, but it's part of a business. Right now we're here to celebrate the time we did have with him. I wish him all the best in the future."

Ray Lewis and Torrey Smith arrived in a limo together and Lewis admitted he's felt a bit relieved in retirement. "Honestly, there's no pressure because every year is always a new year, every offseason is always a new offseason. You're always gearing up for something. But for me now, it's more gearing up for business, more gearing up for life, and more gearing up for the kids. The pressure meter is down a little bit and that's probably the biggest difference." As far as his future as an ESPN analyst, Lewis said that both sides are still working out the details.

Fellow wide receiver Smith, predictably, had a disappointing reaction to Boldin's trade. "It's tough for everyone. Not just myself, obviously there might be a little more responsibility, but I had that last year and the year before that. It's definitely hard. The biggest thing is not so much about football, when you lose someone like that, a mentor, a big brother, someone you love like a brother and would do anything for him. It's tough."

Ray Rice attended the event with his adorable daughter Rayven, while Jacoby Jones arrived with his Dancing With The Stars partner Karina Smirnoff, who he's been doing a gaggle of promotions with this past week. On Boldin, Jones commented, "We learned a lot of routes from him, how he thinks, what he sees . . . He's always a Raven with me."

Once everyone filed into the theater, broadcasters Gerry Sandusky, Qadry Ismail, and Stan White brought out the Lombardi Trophy and introduced the two-hour Super Bowl film. Narrated by Baltimore native and actor Josh Charles, the film took viewers through the season game by game. The sideline snippets were definitely the highlights, something you'd expect if you kept up with NFL Sound FX all year. Bonus features include media day footage, post-game ceremonies, and Harbaugh family interviews.

Reliving the memorable season on a giant screen at The Lyric with players and coaches in attendance was a pretty neat experience. The biggest cheers came from Jones' punt returns, Smith's receptions, and Flacco's hail-mary throws. But, you couldn't help but notice hushes in the theater after the countless Boldin receptions on the highlight reel. Fans, like the players, are very sad to see Q go.

ESPN: Anquan Boldin Traded to 49ers

The afterglow of the Super Bowl just dimmed a bit.

ESPN and other sources are now reporting that the Ravens will send wide receiver Anquan Boldin to their Super Bowl opponent in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

According to previous reports, the Ravens' front office had asked the 32-year-old Boldin to take a pay cut to help the team manage its salary cap.

Boldin is scheduled to earn $6 million in the 2013. He has maintained that he has not sought more money, but wished to play out his current contract in Baltimore.

"At no point, no matter how well I played, would I come back to the table and say, 'I need more money.' The contract that I signed was the contract that I intended to play out," Boldin told USA Today.

Boldin caught 65 passes in the regular season for 921 yards and four touchdowns. He added 22 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns in the post-season Super Bowl run.

Good luck, Anquan. You'll be missed on Sundays, especially third downs.
