Joe Flacco Going to Disney World

Joe Flacco had a really, really good day yesterday. His team won the Super Bowl. He was named MVP. He announced to his friends and family that his wife, Dana, is expecting their second child. And oh yeah, there's this.

Ravens Are Super! Baltimore Celebrates Wild Ride...

Baltimore erupted Sunday night after Ray Lewis' last goal line stand finally nailed down a wild Super Bowl win for the Ravens as fans took to the streets — as much in relief perhaps as celebration — to whoop, sing, dance and shout for joy.

Fireworks exploded over many of Baltimore's neighborhoods, including Canton in the above video, after the Ravens' anxious and unpredictable 34-31 victory over San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII.

Unflabbable Joe Flacco was named the Super Bowl MVP, throwing for three TD's and no interceptions for the third straight playoff game. But after jumping out to a 28-6 lead, following a 108-yard kickoff return by Jacoby Jones to open the second-half, the game took a sudden turn for the worse after a strange power outage that lasted more than 30 minutes and seemed to rob the Ravens of their mojo.

However, as they have all through their remarkable playoff run — underdogs in Denver, New England and New Orleans against the San Francisco — the Ravens proved resilient, rallying the troops to hold off a surging 49er offense.

Ray Lewis, of course, just before the start of the playoffs, said that this would be the last season of his 17-year career in Baltimore. What a way to go out.

"How could it end any other way than that?" Lewis told ESPN afterwards. "And now I get to ride into the sunset with my second ring."

First Raven: Ogden Named Hall of Famer

Courtesy: Baltimore Ravens' Facebook page

Maybe this is a good sign for today’s Super Bowl: The first-ever player drafted by the Baltimore Ravens was named Saturday to the Professional Football Hall of Fame.

Jonathan Ogden, who grew up in Washington, D.C. and played college ball at U.C.L.A, was one of seven named to Canton’s Hall of Fame Class of 2013.

The giant, 6-foot-9, 345-pound offensive tackle, whose younger brother Marques played briefly for the Ravens as well, was named to the Pro Bowl 11 times and helped lead the Ravens to their first Super Bowl victory.

Ogden, in New Orleans for Baltimore’s return to the Super Bowl, told reporters he roamed Bourbon Street people-watching Friday night and passed the anxious time Saturday — before the announcement — watching golf on television.

“Kind of a full-circle weekend here,” Ogden said during the televised Hall of Fame announcement broadcast.

Others in the Class of 2013 include former Dallas Cowboy offensive lineman Larry Allen, former Minnesota Viking wide receiver Cris Carter, former Kansas City defensive tackle Curley Culp, former New York Giant coach Bill Parcells, former Green Bay Packer linebacker Dave Robinson and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer defensive tackle Warren Sapp.

Notably, the Ravens’ first team owner, Art Modell, was not named to the Hall.

Of course, the Ravens’ second-ever draft pick, Ray Lewis, is expected to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2018, five years after he retires following today's game — we really, really hope — with his second Super Bowl championship.

Super Bowl punch recipe!

A big trend I've been noticing on cocktails menus has been the revival of the punch bowl. No longer reserved for school dances or holiday parties, the punch bowl is making a comeback at local bars and restaurants.

B&O American Brasserie has the Chesapeake Punch (Maker's Mark, Appleton rum, Cointreau, orange, lime, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters) and the Gangland Courage (Hennessy VS, Batavia Arrack, apricot cordial, ginger syrup, lemon, and sparkling brut).

Additionally, Hersh's Pizza & Drinks (one of our "Best Bars") introduced rotating punches to their menu. Right now, bar manager Jamaal Green is offering the "Brandy and Bubbly" punch, which would make for a perfect Super Bowl party drink. Or, as Green says, "I want everyone to drink themselves into oblivion with this!" Here's the recipe:

19 oz. brandy (Vecchia Romagna)
11.5 oz. fresh-squeezed orange juice, house-made grenadine, and simple syrup...equal parts
7.6 oz. of squeezed lemon juice
750 ml of prosecco or cava
.5 liter of club soda
Garnish with two lemons sliced into wheels, one orange into half wheels. Can serve 30 per four-ounce serving. Add two egg-shaped ice blocks or one large.

Super Bowl Predictions: The Wild & Crazy

Super Bowl forecasting is inherently an inexact science — which is why we like football — the outcome's determined on the gridiron by incalcuable permutations of bounces, blunders and big plays that ultimately spark one team to victory. That said, who doesn't want to know which team Madden '13 simulations predict will win, for example. Or, which team that famous prognosticating camel in New Jersey says will take home the Lombardi Trophy.

Here's a round-up of predictions. Some wacky, some serious — if you can take NFL beat writers (They all liked the Broncos and Patrots) — seriously.

Madden NFL '13: Baltimore

This annual faux Super Bowl is played with game controllers, not a pigskin. But apparently predicted last seven of nine Super Bowls correctly. Final score: Ravens 27, 49ers 24. Flacco named MVP after throwing two TD's and completing 70 percent of his tosses. We'll take that.

Jimmy Fallon's Puppies: Baltimore

On Late Night, Jimmy Fallon's puppies clearly favored Baltimore. See the video again here.

Clairvoyant Camel: Baltimore

Princess, a 26-year-old camel making her home in south Jersey's Popcorn Park Zoo, has nailed six of the last seven Super Bowl winners and picked the Ravens this year. “She loves graham crackers,” zoo manager, John Bergmann, told ABC News. “In one palm we write down with one of these magic markers the 49ers, and on the other, the Ravens. We cover them with a graham cracker so she can’t see. Whichever she chooses to eat first is her pick.” Princess went for the graham crackers hidden in the Ravens' hand.

Biased Orangutan: San Francisco

Siabu, a Chaffee Zoo, Fresno, CA-based primate, went with hometown 49ers, but has a mediocore track record over the years.

Nate Silver: San Francisco

The man of the political FiveThirtyEight blog pulled some numbers together and suggests the 49ers likely will win. Boo that.

Dr. Dre: Baltimore

TMZ reports, the rapper is going with the Ravens: “I’m excited for Ray Lewis,” Dre told TMZ. “He’s a good guy and I’m a fan of his … I’m wishing the best for him.” Yay, Dre!

NFL Beat Writers: San Francisco

According to a poll of NFL reporters covering the NFL, 55 percent of football journalists think the 49ers will win this Sunday. Whatever.

My Ravens playlist

Okay, so I swear that I came up with this Ravens-themed playlist (for my boot camp tonight) before I saw that Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake had created one, too. But the two are eerily similar.

  1. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
  2. Nelly - Hot in Here
  3. Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours
  4. Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight
  5. Elvis Costello - Pump it Up
  6. Eminem - Lose Yourself
  7. Blur - Song 2
  8. Eddie Money - Two Tickets to Paradise (Ed Reed's song of the moment)
  9. MGK - Invincible
  10. The Black Keys - Hell of a Season
  11. Florence + The Machine - Shake it Out
  12. Beyoné - Irreplaceable
  13. Flaming Lips - Fight Test (who will have a commercial during the Super Bowl)

What songs would you add?

Best New Orleans bars to watch the Super Bowl

You couldn't ask for a better nightlife city than New Orleans. Just read my piece from when I was there when the Saints won the championship in 2010. So there is no shortage of amazing bars and restaurants to catch the big game. Here are our particular favorites:

The spot where I watched the Saints win the Lombardi was Lucy's in the Central Business District. Not only is this bar close to the Superdome, but it's a well-known hang out for Saints players. The scene two years ago was a giant tailgate party and the game was projected onto the side of a building. Specials this Sunday include $3 mimosas, $4 Bloody Marys, $15 buckets of beer, $5 well drinks, and $5 house margaritas.

Again just steps away from the Superdome is Walk-On's Bistreaux & Bar, which is offering an entire weekend's worth of events. Starting with a party on Saturday, the bar will be partnered with Baltimore radio station 105.7 the Fan. The tailgate party will feature autograph and photo opportunities with Lardarius Webb and other players, as well as New Orleans food and drink (jambalaya, gumbo, hurricanes); admission is $40. On Sunday, there's a VIP tailgate party sponsored by ESPN with all-inclusive food and drink, live entertainment, and access to a post-game party. All-inclusive VIP admission for that is $400.

If craft beer and raw oysters are more your scene, head Uptown to Cooter Brown's Tavern, which features 38 beers on tap including a bunch of local favorites and tons of international rarities. The place has 17 flat screens and two eight-foot drop down screens. The menu includes New Orleans classics like raw oysters, po'boys, and crawfish. Plus, the bar is located on the historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, if you want to fit in something touristy.

Tracey's was the original bar in the Irish Channel neighborhood (across from the beautiful Garden District). This Irish sports bar is pretty huge, and has a beer hall type feel with 20 TVs. Though Tracey's is known for its Irish classics and po'boys, the chef said they'll probably put crabcakes on the menu for Baltimore fans on Sunday.

But if you're looking to party closer to the French Quarter (where most revelers will end up anyway), the Jimani Lounge is a divey sports bar known for its excellent food (hamburgers and crawfish pasta), as well as its juke-box entertainment. Above all, the Jimani is a great place to catch a football game and, in fact, has officially banned NFL commissioner Roger Goodell from the establishment, like the Saints' loyalists they are.

100-year-old bakery scores big

Ravens cakesFenwick Bakery in Parkville is all about the Ravens these days. It's been churning out its popular mini football cakes for weeks and will continue to do so right up until Super Bowl Sunday.

The small pound cakes are $1.25 each and $15 a dozen. "We will continue to take orders until the last minute," says co-owner Michael Meckel.

Mike is as proud of the Ravens as he is of the bakery, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this month. He's worked there for 33 years and purchased the bakery in 1994 with another longtime employee, Claudette Wilson.

The business partners bought the shop from Walter Uebersax, whose family founded the bakery, then known as Uebersax Bakery, in 1913.

The bakery is a "love story," they say, that began when Ernest and Alvena Uebersox married and started the shop on what is now Washington Boulevard. Eventually, the bakery was renamed and re-located to Harford Road, where it continues to thrive.

Team work. It works. Go Ravens!

Football Team's Namesake Poem Published Today in 1845

I interrupt the steady stream of Ravens football coverage to bring you Ravens poetry coverage. (Hey! Where are you going?!)

Turns out, in a nice bit of serendipity, Edgar Allan Poe's most-famous poem, The Raven, was first published today in 1845. The Awl has a nice little post about it and the effect it had on Poe's career. (He became famous. He stayed poor.)

Of course, Poe famously died (allegedly) drunk and (definitely) penniless in Baltimore four years later. He wasn't much for happy endings, but here's hoping the Ravens get one this Sunday.

Confused about the playoff overtime rules?

Yeah, us too. Let the choir from the Old St. Paul Episcopal Church chant it out for you (while showing some love for our hometown boys) in this, the Ravenlican Chant.
