Out of the Closet

Do you fear that whenever you shop vintage, you end up looking like a reject from a Halloween party? Pam Haner, above left, and Erin Fitzgibbons are here to help.

Last fall, the duo partnered to create online clothing store Salome Vintage, with an eye toward changing the way people perceive vintage shopping.

"Images are the most powerful way to show consumers how to wear certain pieces," Haner explains. So the site offers "digital lookbooks," which highlight how simple styling can update an outmoded look.

Fitzgibbons suggests easing yourself into vintage shopping if you are a first timer.

"Some clothing from bygone eras is just quirky by nature," she notes. "Accessories are often the easiest way to incorporate vintage and make a look unique without being over the top."

"Thinking outside the box is key when wearing vintage," Haner adds. "You do not want to look like you just stepped off a period piece movie set. Mix decades, pair modern with new, high with low."

While curating the online shop—which carries both men's and women's pieces—the pair keep in mind today's runway trends and are careful to steer clear of anything that is too "costume-y." "There are so many options when shopping vintage that everyone can find something that suits their personal style and feels good to them," Haner reassures.

The best part: "Vintage is one of a kind," Haner says. "So no one can just copy your exact look."
