Maryland Vein Professionals is an ultra-modern practice with an “old school” approach. Founder Jonathan Calure, M.D., believes that the doctor-patient relationship should be one of trust. “It saddens me to see that medicine has devolved into a business model,” says Dr. Calure.

Since its founding in 2006, Maryland Vein Professionals has grown from a single employee, Dr. Calure, to 40 employees, including three physicians. In 2009, the practice welcomed Dr. Jane Lingelbach, board-certified vascular surgeon, to the Chevy Chase practice where she serves as surgical director.

Other offices, located at two state-of-the-art surgical centers in Columbia and Annapolis, are devoted exclusively to minimally invasive vein care.

Dr. Calure and his staff believe that each patient should have the time to ask as many questions as they need and to fully understand both their medical condition and treatment options. “We spend at least 15 to 20 minutes with each patient just to explain the condition and treatment,” says Dr. Calure. “I feel fortunate to operate a practice where we have the time to ensure that our patients are completely comfortable with the process.”

Board-certified in both general surgery and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Dr. Calure is a leader in the United States in clinical experience with VNUS Closure, having performed more than 7,500 procedures since 2005. The practice has been designated as a national center of excellence by VNUS Medical for training in the procedure. When he’s not spending time with his family or cheering for the Orioles and the Ravens, Dr. Calure is involved with more than 20 charitable organizations, including the Special Olympics of Maryland, Breast Cancer Research, the Brain Tumor Society, and the American Heart Association.

Hakan Koymen founded Chesapeake Pediatric Dental Group in 2005 to help deliver high-quality dental care to all children from
all backgrounds.

“We build trust with children at an early age and reinforce the ideology of prevention,” says Dr. Koymen, who attended dental school at the University of Detroit Mercy, then entered a post-graduate residency in pediatric dentistry at the University of Maryland, and was named a “Top Pediatric Dentist” by his peers in the April Baltimore magazine survey.

Dr. Luz Tennassee trained at the University of Maryland and worked at the University’s Medical Center, as well as at Kernan Hospital. Chesapeake Pediatric Dental Group likes to see children from the time their first tooth erupts through young adulthood. “All kids develop at different rates, so at each visit, we base our approach on the child’s cognitive level,” says Dr. Koymen.

Drs. Koymen and Tennassee are both board-certified in pediatric dentistry, and Dr. Koymen is Dental Director for the nonprofit Maryland Healthy Smiles program, which provides dental care to underserved children. In 2004, Dr. Tennassee traveled to the Dominican Republic to provide dental care to the residents of the small town of El Cercado. Drs. Koymen and Tennassee agree that “no child should ever have to suffer with dental pain or distress.”

John Martindale has a vision—and this wouldn’t be the first time. In 1985, that vision was to build a roofing company that served residential customers with integrity and excellent service. In 1995, the vision became building a diversified construction company providing an entire suite of services for the exterior of the home. In 2005, Martindale had yet another dream, to create a commercial side to Brothers Services that mirrored the excellent service and workmanship offered in the residential arena. All three visions became a reality.

Celebrating his 25th year in business, Martindale now has his grandest vision ever: To not only be a model in this region of how a business can operate profitably with integrity, but also to be a powerhouse for giving back to the community. Martindale envisions an organization where one of its core purposes is to proactively improve the communities it serves, through redirecting meaningful portions of its profits, through lending its skilled manpower where needed, through developing like-minded alliance partners, and by setting an example that all businesses can aspire to. One of Brothers’ most recent opportunities to give back to the community was their involvement with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, where they were the roofing contractor on its makeover project in Northeast Baltimore. Brothers helped to rebuild the Girls Hope group home, which helps teens better themselves through education, community services, and more. Brothers donated materials and installation of the home’s new metal and rubber roofs.

Stay tuned: If the past is any indication, Martindale’s vision will become his latest success.

The four principals of Owings Brothers Contracting have been remodeling since their teens. These four brothers credit their work ethic and drive to their father, a retired steel worker. “He always taught us to work hard and to do our best with a good attitude,” says Michael Owings, who along with his brothers have tried to live up to their father’s example. He encouraged each of his eight children to receive further education, and each brother/owner holds a college degree, as well as other industry-related certifications.

During these tough economic times, the stability of Owings Brothers Contracting is credited to their foundational philosophy of family first. This philosophy is the cornerstone of their business and one they will continue to build upon. Their goal over the past 27 years has been to build for their clients as they would for family. Each project is managed by a brother, assuring that every job meets the high standard that is the trademark for Owings Brothers.

“This generation has experienced an economic downturn that has been unprecedented in their lives. People are looking for security and peace of mind,” says Michael, and that’s what Owings Brothers offers to their clients. Whether you are looking to remodel your home or build a new one, you can depend on Owings Brothers Contracting: They stand behind their name, and their name is their family.

www.performspine.com

Performance Spine & Rehabilitation provides treatment for all neuromusculoskeletal issues. “If we have done our jobs right, this will be your last stop to feeling better,” says Dr. Matthew Lepito, who, with his wife Susan, opened the office in 2006.

The practice, which always puts patients first, offers a range of chiropractic techniques, active and passive physical therapy, traction/decompression, and on-site radiology. Dr. Lepito also specializes in sports medicine, disc injuries, and musculoskeletal issues related to pregnancy.

Dr. Lepito, who graduated magna cum laude from New York Chiropractic College, believes that appropriate treatments lead to successful outcomes, and this starts with an accurate diagnosis. He works with his patients comprehensively and holistically to figure out what is
behind their injuries and discomforts. And this, he points out, cannot be done without gaining a patient’s trust.

A member of the Phi Chi Omega national honors society and a certificate holder for the American Pregnancy Association, Dr. Lepito is a certified exercise, strength, and conditioning specialist. He works with local gyms, including the Maryland Athletic Club and MAC Express,
as well as offering services at health fairs and lectures to local businesses in Towson, Cockeysville, and Hunt Valley.

Susan Lepito runs the business side of the practice, managing payments and billing, as well as the marketing and advertising. “We work well together as a team,” she says, “mainly because we have such complementary skills and, sometimes, differing opinions.” On the business side, the practice employs new and innovative electronics and strives to be a “green” paperless office.

Dr. Lepito is an avid mountain biker and can be found on many weekend mornings at either Loch Raven Reservoir or Patapsco State Park. He spends most of his free time with Susan and their daughter Kaitlyn.

Founded in 1989, Studio One is an interior design firm specializing in kitchens, baths, remodeling, and new construction. It has completed high-end residential projects in New York, Florida, New Jersey, Connecticut, the Eastern Shore, and the District of Columbia, using the expertise of partners Rebeka Gurfinchel and Marie Schwartz, each with 30 years’ design experience, to tailor the look and feel of each undertaking to the style of the individual client. Also among their credits are several upscale Baltimore restaurants.

The two business partners bring with them a worldly perspective: Rebeka is originally from Peru and Marie from Italy, so they are as comfortable with Milan high-tech as with antiques, which has helped the firm grow to become the state’s sixth largest design firm, according to the Baltimore Business Journal. Named Baltimore’s Best by Baltimore magazine, Studio One has received awards from The Maryland Home Builders Association and has had its work featured in House and Garden, Southern Accents, Florida Design, and many regional magazines.

She worked for the Discerning Eye interior design firm, then for the local Tile Exhibit kitchen and bath company before starting Studio One.

In their spare time, both are gourmet cooks and love swapping recipes. So how do you meld a love of cooking and a talent for design? They hope to write a cookbook with original recipes, illustrated with their kitchen designs.
