The best gift I ever got ....

As a mom all my brains have turned to mush and I can barely remember what I had for breakfast let alone the wonderful gifts I've received over the years. (Ok, ok, my all-time favorite gift is my silhouette necklace of my son—it captures his fat cheeks and curls, forever frozen in time) So, I asked my young interns to come up with their favorite gifts (see below.) I'd love to hear from you all as well. Coming later—the best gift they ever gave. —JED

The best gift I ever got ....

As a sophomore in college, surprises are becoming more of a rarity on Christmas Day as my taste, especially in clothes, becomes more defined. As I step closer into the adult world of gift giving, I am beginning to realize society defines a great gift as consisting by how much it cost and how thoughtful it is. While these presents are enjoyable, without the core gift of time and effort, they can become forgettable. Last Christmas, the gift of time and effort came to me and my sister via an envelope after all of the presents under the tree were already opened. Inside the envelope was a scavenger hunt that led us to two surf boards, our dream Christmas present. After we settled down, our parents told us that they made phone calls for two weeks trying to locate a pair of boards, drove 12 hours in one day, and hid them for two weeks. While I am beyond thrilled to have my own surf board, what I most remember about that Christmas morning is how loved I felt when I heard about the amount of time and effort my parents put into finding the perfect gift and making it a surprise. —Kaitlin Bulavinetz, intern

The best gift I ever got ....

As a fairly indecisive person, picking a favorite anything is never an easy task for me. With the exception of favorite movie (Love, Actually of course!), I can barely name my top 3, let alone all-time favorite. So when Janelle asked us to choose our all-time favorite Christmas gift, she was greeted by a blank stare coming from my direction on the other side of her desk. Choosing my favorite Christmas gift ever received seemed, at first, like an impossible task. Sure, I’ve gotten some cool, exciting gifts throughout my 23 years. There was the karaoke machine when I was in elementary school (which I’m sure my mother eventually regretted), new Mission hockey skates back when I played ice hockey (yes, I’m serious), a Sega Genesis, even my GPS!  Still, nothing jumped out in my memory as a clear-cut winner. So, I’m afraid I have to take the boring route and go with the gift that, as I recall, made me the most excited at the time, and which I ended up getting the most use out of: my first computer. It was the Christmas of 2001. I was in ninth grade at the time, and the closest thing I had ever had to a modern-day computer was an old school Apple word processor (its only known function being the ability to play a wicked...

A PRESENT FOR ...

hot-chocolate.jpg

your chocoholic best friend.

I stumbled into this shop when I was home in Frederick for Thanksgiving. Zoë’s Chocolate Co. has a long history (her great-grandparents came to America from Greece, first to Baltimore and then Waynesboro, Pennsylvania and opened their first chocolate store in 1902. Her father is now head chocolatier.) The chocolates are perfection. They even hand roll their own candy canes. And the hot chocolate is a blend of homemade European style drinking chocolate. I love the whisk. $12.95 online at zoeschocolate.com or at either of their two retail stores.

Weekend

So, I managed to make it to Merry Mart on Sunday. It was a little smaller than last year (no upstairs) but the vendors all seemed happy. I always like to see what these tables have: Pellinore Press, Pinkkiss Pottery, Lola Miren, Red Prairie Press, and Jill Popowich. But I also found some new faves: Design By Night, Chocolaterra, and Mark Supik & Co. One woman could not believe the price for a handmade necklace at the Tu Vida table. (As in she was very happy.) And artist Shawn Theron (SOGH) greets everyone like a lost friend. So, where did you end up? Anyone pop over to the pop up shops? Two more great holiday shows this coming weekend—so stay tuned. —JED

Custom rubber stamps run about $23 and make a great gift paired with a stamp pad.

Handmade Mart Holiday Shop N Stroll

If you feel like heading out of town on Saturday—a few local crafters will be at the Handmade Mart Holiday Shop N Stroll in Silver Spring. Click here for a vendor list. The event runs 10-3. Look for local Katie McDonough (half of the Chelle Paperie team) and a creative crafter. Check out her knitting biz Churchtown Chapeau Co. and her amazing fabric flowers. Also, Kohli from Red Tree will be showcasing her great jewelry.  I love her "Ameila" earrings. (And then come back and hit the local shows too.)
