Behind the Scenes—Spring Fashion Shoot

I'm so proud of our spring fashion shoot. It should be showing up on newsstands next week. Our theme was Alice and Wonderland and the staff at Red Tree took on the challenge of creating eight sets for this shoot—in the midst of a buying trip to Atlanta. At times I think they were sorry they ever said yes to me (ha! ha!) ... but wowowowow they just blew all of us away with their creativity, craftsmanship, and work ethic. Plus, they all work so well together and I don't think I've ever laughed so much on a shoot before. They literally had 30 minutes or so to change over to the next set while we changed hair and makeup and redressed our beautiful red head. I'm lucky to work with so many amazing people from our hair and makeup genius (Dean Krapf) to my uber talented styling assistant (Kim Chewing) to two great interns (Kaitlin & Becca) ... and of course our art director (Amanda White) and photographer (Dave Colwell) ... wow, this is starting to sound like an acceptance speech. Anyway, I think what you'll see in the March issue of the...

Shine Collective

328.jpg

I finally stopped by the new locale of Shine Collective tucked behind Woodberry Kitchen. The girls are working on a piece for me for the April issue of Baltimore magazine. It is really a magnificent space. (More on that in the April issue.) It's a destination now—not somewhere one just stumbles upon but the trio (Jamie, Melissa & Alana) all seem upbeat and optimistic. As someone commented on this blog earlier—boutiques have to become something more than just boutiques these days and Shine really succeeds. Everything is so well thought out from the paint choices to the shelving units to the designers. You want to stay and lounge. Woodberry has the potential to attract other shops that blur the line between art and retail. (Now, they just need that coffee shop again.) Shine is open Thursday to Saturday from 12-7 and Sunday from 12-4, the other days by appointment. Someone is usually around during the week—so just call.—JED

Circus Peanuts

peanuts.jpg
So, we had our April photo shoot today for UpFront shopping. Our Objects of Desire is all about the circus. We found so many wonderful items around town—I'm really excited. I went to the grocery store last night looking for Cracker Jacks but instead found Animal Crackers and Circus Peanuts. Remember those? They are a creamsicle orange and smell like banana cream pie (according to my intern.) They look like they should be marshmallowy but are dense like actual Styrofoam peanuts. I tasted one (for research!) and they just kind of taste like paper mache sugar. A little to chewy—if you catch my drift. My favorite is the Circus Peanut Marshmallow Ambrosia recipe on the back. All this to tell you that the April OOD is going to be fantastic. —JED

Blizzard Stories

Talk Shop has been on blizzard hiatus ... any good shopping/blizzard stories—other than at the grocery stores? Any places still have winter boots? We'll be back next week! —JED

Classic Play

toast_47381.jpg

The brains behind Ellie Bellie Kids (tutus, capes, crowns) has turned their e-zine Classic Play into a smart web site. Full disclosure, I'm a contributor. I'm a big fan of founder Jennifer Cooper and was excited to be a part of such a beautiful project. This month's theme is "Love." There are some really beautiful personal essays, but also ideas for family date night (with beautiful photographs by Jennifer's husband Dave) and some treat suggestions for your little valentine from Cecilia Lebovitz, artist and creative director of handmade designs for wee ones site ...

Change on the Avenue

So, it goes ... the Circle of Retail Life. Shine Collective moves to Clipper Mill (more later this week on that) ... and now there is a buzz about what's heading into the old spot (prime real estate) on the Avenue. Last I heard it's gonna be a men's store—from some local folks with another (hip women's) store already in the area. That would be great for all the fashion starved men in Baltimore—especially now that Whimsy|Reason is now just Whimsy. I spent the weekend shopping and eating with my husband in Brooklyn. (Stay tuned for a travel piece.) So many amazing stores—but one that really stands out is the manly man store Smith & Butler. (between Cobble Hill & Carroll Gardens on Smith Street.) We could use something like that here.—JED

I Heart The Container Store

storage-sac-1.jpg

I am slightly obsessed with things having a place to go. A pile of mail looks a whole lot better tucked into a wire basket. A gaggle of crayons look neater in a small container than the original torn box. And so on. So, I love these recycled coffee sacks from Henry Road—updated with some striped fabric. I am already picturing all the things I can shove in there. Only $35.

Baltimore By Hand

bride-2010-87.jpg

Local designer Christy Zuccarini—of For Queen Victoria fame—has revived her popular blog Baltimore By Hand where she writes about the indie craft community in and around Charm City. Look for features about "local artists, crafters and designers, DIY projects, upcoming events, places to shop, and other handmade happenings." Also, in the works (check back mid-February) is an online marketplace Baltimore by Hand: The Shop at Big Cartel. Yesterday, she wrote about the local artists selected for the prestigious American Craft Council Show. We featured Christy in our December 2008 Made in Baltimore story and her jewelry (necklace and bracelet) graced our model (in one of my favorite shots) at this year's...
