Land of Nod

Yesterday, I was picking up items at Crate & Barrel for a shoot and I noticed they had added a new Land of Nod section. The Land of Nod is a great kid's catalogue with furniture, bedding, and toys. So brilliant to bring the catalogue to life for the holidays. I already found a dollhouse I want for my daughter and a tabletop foosball table for my son (and husband.) It's so nice to get to see the items in the flesh! —JED

Office Clean-Up

We got new carpet here at Baltimore magazine. It was long overdue and much needed—but we had to empty our office completely for the task. Most folks only had a few things to move around. For me—it was like moving out of your house. Magazines, props, a ridiculous amount of books and all the goodies that get sent me had to be boxed up and moved to the conference room. Luckily, I have two very strong and capable interns who took over for their pregnant boss. It felt good to purge a lot of stuff that I don't actually use but that's been collecting dust in my office for four years.

Here are some things I learned about myself in the move:

1) I have every Anthropologie catalogue every mailed to me. I can't part with them.

2) I hoard magazines—especially the ones no longer published (Blueprint, Domino, Cookie)

3) It feels good to be organized.

4) I hope I never have to leave this job and box everything up again!

Intern Jessica Hargest spoke with the designer:

How did you first venture into the fashion industry? I was 7 years old when my mother opened a ladies clothing store in Havre de Grace. I grew up in her store and that is how I became interested in fashion. Then when I was 20 years old, as a sophomore at Washington College in Chestertown, I started my first job at Hamburger’s Department Store. I have been in NYC since 1973 and started as an assistant buyer, then buyer, and...

Farewell to Vasarri

This Saturday marks Vasarri's last day of business. My intern Shabdiece Esfahani spoke with Vasarri owner Gail Kandel about her favorite memories of being a shop owner:

"It's a hard question to answer because so many good things happened here with wonderful woman ... and so many personal relationships! It's very up close ...very personal and very involved when picking out something special for someone and you feel lucky enough to be able to share that with so many incredible, wonderful woman." For the past 12 years,  Vasarri was the place to go for any special event. Kandel calls her relationship with the store "a love story." The week that Kandel announced the closure of Vasarri was "the most incredible week of my life. Like a joyous memorial service." Hugs and tears were abundent, with many of her long time customers in disbelief that it will not longer be their faithful destination.

One of her regular clients came in on her day off, says Kandel, after staying up until 4 AM delivering babies, just to bring her a...
