I Heart The Container Store

storage-sac-1.jpg

I am slightly obsessed with things having a place to go. A pile of mail looks a whole lot better tucked into a wire basket. A gaggle of crayons look neater in a small container than the original torn box. And so on. So, I love these recycled coffee sacks from Henry Road—updated with some striped fabric. I am already picturing all the things I can shove in there. Only $35.

Baltimore By Hand

bride-2010-87.jpg

Local designer Christy Zuccarini—of For Queen Victoria fame—has revived her popular blog Baltimore By Hand where she writes about the indie craft community in and around Charm City. Look for features about "local artists, crafters and designers, DIY projects, upcoming events, places to shop, and other handmade happenings." Also, in the works (check back mid-February) is an online marketplace Baltimore by Hand: The Shop at Big Cartel. Yesterday, she wrote about the local artists selected for the prestigious American Craft Council Show. We featured Christy in our December 2008 Made in Baltimore story and her jewelry (necklace and bracelet) graced our model (in one of my favorite shots) at this year's...

Dear Santa ...

All I want for Christmas is:

1) A card shop/book store in Southeast Baltimore.

2) For all the boutiques to finish 2009 strong and have a successful 2010.

3) For a baby boutique to finally arrive in Hampden.

4) For an Anthropologie to pop up—somewhere.

5) For validated parking at the Best Buy.

What do you want? —JED

The best gift I ever gave ...

“Make me something.”  This is all my parents have ever wanted for Christmas.  At times it is easier said than done. Since I am no longer taking art classes, gone is my endless supply of creative work that could easily be altered into a present. However, it was always discouraging when I would see my present decorating some cabinet along with other knick-knacks. In times like these, a store bought sweater seemed more practical. It could at least keep them warm. The real problem with making gifts is how to merge creativity and practicality. In recent years, my sister and I have formulated a solution, paint your own pottery. It all started three years ago when our mom expressed desire for different light switch covers in our family room. As fate would have it, a paint your own pottery place opened down the street. My sister and I decided to investigate and discovered that the prices were manageable, and the environment was much friendlier than any mall parking lot prior to Christmas day. At times it became a bit stressful, as our artistic styles vary, but we successfully collaborated on light switch covers for our parent’s room, bathroom and family room and have returned to paint other items such as bowls, platters and business...

The best gift I ever gave ...

The best gift I ever gave was neither bought nor ordered (despite the parts used to assemble it), but rather an idea that I crafted all on my own. My grandmother and I have always been extremely close. That being said, I was sick of giving her the traditional I-don’t-know-what-to-get-you candle, or other typical knickknack for her house. One day last year, a mere week before Christmas, I had a vision (and let me tell you, when it comes to creativity, I don’t have many of those). Weeks earlier, I had seen a gorgeous dark red/crimson mosaic vase on sale at Walmart (yes, Walmart). Luckily, they still had it, and from there I went on to enlist the help of my mother and grandfather in putting together a collection of photos to capture my grandmother’s life. From gorgeous black and whites of her as a young girl playing with her sisters in the 40s, to my grandparents wedding photos from the early 50s, the birth of my mother and uncle, and finally a recent photo that my grandmother and I had taken together at a wedding. After careful consideration (we already went over my indecisiveness), I selected my favorites from different periods of her life and had them copied into a series of small black and whites. I then purchased wire,...

Pop-Up Shops Rock

If you haven't had a chance to stop by yet—the shops will only be around for a few more days. Here are a few pics I took on my phone. Went looking for gifts for others and of course ended up buying something for me. —JED 1222091300b.jpg1222091300.jpg1222091300a.jpg
