Spotlight On: Sa Sa Jewelry

heartstrings

Sarah Johnston, founder and designer of Sa Sa Jewelry has created a cool and modern collection of sterling silver charms, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Sa Sa began in 2008 out of a spare bedroom in Johnston’s home and today is based in historic Ellicott City at 8186 Main Street. Sa Sa’s motto “Live Love Create,” is exactly what Johnston does on a daily basis. She herself is the designer of each of the charms and hand makes many of them. Her charm designs run the gamut from whimsical—hearts and anchors, below—to dark: skull and cross bones and a revolver. All of her products are personally hand finished and any custom order or stamping is done personally as well. Though she mostly works in silver, Johnston customizes pieces in gold and platinum too. Other materials she uses includes embroidery floss, a recent development in her designs in efforts to incorporate color into her pieces. One of her more current designs is the Heartstring, above. Because they are handmade, each heart is unique and different and lies on a different color embroidery floss. All of Johnston’s designs can be seen on her website, www.jewelrybysasa.com, or in person at her shop. —Samantha Cohen, (summer) intern
