Ma Petite Shoe hosts a green-themed First Fridays event welcoming the shoe line Unstitched Utilities
Unstitched Utilities is a new green-friendly shoe line (based out of New Jersey), providing lightweight, resilient, and stylish footwear for eco-conscience consumers. Join Hampden's Ma Petite Shoe on June 1 from 6-9 p.m. for a special sale, Rocket Fuel cocktails, and the launch of the innovative brand.
"The story is basically when two worlds collide," says Ma Petite Shoe owner Susannah Siger, who filled us in about the brand’s history. UU was founded in 2010 by Kevin Crowley, Jack Steinweis, and Mark Kane who were all former FILA executives. As a designer, Crowley previously worked with a material called polyethylene (better known as Tyvek®), while helping to create hazmat suits. Dabbling in shoe design, he decided to combine the two worlds to create an eco-friendly, impermeable, and fashionable everyday shoe, made from that same material, Tyvek®.
According to Siger, these sneakers have only been in the store for about six weeks and people have already returned to purchase multiple pairs in different colors.
Ma Petite customers aren't the only ones excited about Unstitched Utilities. "They are working with integrating it with other vegan materials and that’s part of the interest for us. The second thing is definitely the creative possibilities,” says Siger. “We are discussing how down the line we would love to partner with them, similarly to the time we worked with Jeffrey Campbell to do exclusive designs and colors for us.”
Unstitched Utilities is not just for the "geek chic" man or woman. The company has created multiple designs that can fit anyone's style: whether comfy and casual (Hang Up Slip On), downtown hipster (The Artisan, which was featured in our UpFront Shopping section of the June issue), or traditional with a futuristic twist (Fast Lane). —Sharea Elliott, intern
