Q&A with Christian Siriano

Fashion designer, Maryland native, and Baltimore School for the Arts alumnus Christian Siriano opens his first boutique in the Big Apple.

Recently I got to chat with Christian Siriano about his new store (which celebrates its launch today), his upcoming collection, and some fond memories of his time spent in Baltimore.

When attending BSA, were there some places in Baltimore that you gathered inspiration from?

The teachers we had were very inspiring. What was really nice was that a lot of them showed at local galleries. I remember I had this one teacher, Kirsten Rook, who was doing this story of interesting jewelry using felt. I just thought she was the coolest girl—I loved her and thought she was a very eccentric person. I was very young and still learning, so I kind of was inspired by anything. Baltimore is a good city. It was a very creative city at the time I was there and...

Boh Honors Scunny

In the past week several of our editors, Suzanne Loudermilk, Ron Cassie, and Jess Blumberg, blogged about the horrible news of Patrick “Scunny” McCusker's fatal bicycle accident that happened last Friday night in Ocean City. As the owner of Nacho Mama’s and Mama’s on the Half Shell, he was a staple in the Baltimore community and will be truly missed.

Scunny spent a great deal of time working with the nonprofit; Believe in Tomorrow Children’s Foundation. In honor of his contribution to both Canton and his work with the organization, Boh t-shirts ($20) have been designed...

Baltimore's Fashion's Night Out

Hello, my name is Taylor Fuller and I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend my fall semester as a style intern here at Baltimore magazine. I am a senior at Loyola University and I am studying journalism and photography. I love everything about fashion and art and how it is used to express yourself. Living in Baltimore for the past four years has allowed me to explore and fall in love with a city I hope to continue calling home.

And now for my first post...

Now Open in Harbor East

Last night a few of us at the magazine attended Anthropologie's Grand Opening celebration. The store looked amazing (of course), along with their perfectly styled staff.

We especially loved the Baltimore touches that were added to the ever so thoughtful and creative visual displays—Domino Sugar boxes, Edgar Allan Poe screen prints (made by the store's visual team and several MICA students), and an ode to the Howard Street Bridge behind the cash wrap in the form of antique Dutch shutters that resemble the bridge's color palette. Great job!

Ol' Bay Tees

Drop by South Moon Under to pick up your own Ol' Bay tee. Not only do we have a thing for its clever crabby design, but also love knowing that for every tee sold a portion will be donated to the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. The non-profit organization protects and conserves the waters, land, shorelines, and wetlands surrounding Maryland's coastal bays, which include Ocean City, Ocean Pines, Berlin, and Assateague Island National Seashore.

ELLE Loves Ruth

In honor of the patriotic holiday that is closely approaching, ELLE magazine named the best boutiques in the entire U.S. of A. For Maryland: Ruth Shaw. Although this isn't surprising to us, we would like to thank ELLE for the recognition of this local fashion institution. Congrats to Ray Mitchener and his team at Ruth Shaw!

New Stores Coming to Towson Town Center

Yesterday I attended the unveiling of four new stores coming to Towson Town Center's Crate and Barrel wing. The retailers, which include Lilly Pulitzer, L'OCCITANE, Sur La Table, and Marbles: The Brain Store, are set to open by late summer/early fall. In addition to the new names, White House Black Market is relocating from Level 3 to the luxury wing with plans to expand and showcase a new look.

This will be the first store in the area for Lilly...

Nat Nast Trunk Show

J.S. Edwards Hosts a Nat Nast Jazz Event and Fall Trunk Show

In 1946, Kansas City, Missouri a man named Nat Nast gave America the bowling shirt. The iconic piece was inspired by a sport that became very popular in the US in the '40s. The concept: to give bowlers extra room and comfort "so that when you extend your arm out, it gives more," says daughter of Nat Nast (and now president of the company), Barbara Nast Saletan. She describes the design as what became known as the "action back: two inverted pleats, giving more fabric in each shoulder blade."

Saletan, who will be at the trunk show event, relaunched the brand in 2000 with her sister, using the original idea of their father's shirt, while bringing in elements to make it more luxurious. Today, each shirt is somewhat a work of art of their own—using the chain stitching that the shirt became known for to explore themes that are important to their customer ranging from sports, to vintage cars, to drinks, and...

Fashion At The Point

Katwalk Boutique

On Saturday, June 16 from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Katwalk Boutique (located in Fells Point), will launch their first annual "Fashion at the Point," a free all day shopping event.  Fashion, music, food, and more will fill the streets of Fells Point (corner of Broadway and Aliceanna St.) while pop-up fashion shows will be performed on the "Fashion Express," a 50ft. long flatbed truck.

Toni James, owner of Katwalk Boutique, says this event came about to celebrate the store's 15th anniversary, give exposure to some new stores, as well as celebrate several boutiques that have been in the area. The...
