25 Days of Gifts—#9

rocket

For the kid that loves to explore/make/build/do—anything from the Maryland Science Center's gift shop. Beside being a great museum—this Baltimore institution has a packed shop filled with all sorts of great gift ideas that make learning fun. Some examples—Perfumery, which teaches about the science of fragrance. There are kits where kids create bottle rockets powered by baking soda and vinegar and learn about chemical reactions. And another for learning about the properties of flight by building an airplane. There's a family game called "Scabs and Guts" where kids learn about the human body by acting out diseases, injuries, illnesses etc. And the Geopalz activity tracker. (And remember a family membership is a great gift too.) —JED

The Round-Up: Merry Mart

merry mart

The Creative Alliance Merry Mart lived up to its name this year. Held at the historic Patterson Theatre, the vendors who showcased their work were imaginative and professional. Now, a holiday art/craft market veteran I was able to peruse the offerings with ease, and I was happily surprised that I had already seen only a handful of the vendors in my holiday art show rounds. Jill Popowich's beautiful handcrafted metal jewelry was my first stop. Tigerlilly, another brand I was familiar with, had an amazing selection of the preserved nature pieces in metals like silver and copper. I especially loved the delicate double acorn pieces in copper.

Fisticuffs had a plethora of natural reclaimed leather cuffs and wristbands with etched and embroidered detailing. They were displayed, smartly, on horizontal bars aligned on standing folding racks and organized in descending size order, making the pieces extremely easy to browse through and find the perfect Fisticuff.

mouth party

For the person with the sweet tooth in your life—Mouth Party's new Scrumptious (and that's not an exaggeration) caramel sauce. From our favorite local caramel company, it's amazing warmed and dumped over ice cream, pie, or apples. (And don't forget the bit size caramels—we're slightly addicted to the sea salt ones.) It's $8.50 and still so new you can only order by e-mailing the web site. —JED
