Farewell to Vasarri

This Saturday marks Vasarri's last day of business. My intern Shabdiece Esfahani spoke with Vasarri owner Gail Kandel about her favorite memories of being a shop owner:

"It's a hard question to answer because so many good things happened here with wonderful woman ... and so many personal relationships! It's very up close ...very personal and very involved when picking out something special for someone and you feel lucky enough to be able to share that with so many incredible, wonderful woman." For the past 12 years,  Vasarri was the place to go for any special event. Kandel calls her relationship with the store "a love story." The week that Kandel announced the closure of Vasarri was "the most incredible week of my life. Like a joyous memorial service." Hugs and tears were abundent, with many of her long time customers in disbelief that it will not longer be their faithful destination.

One of her regular clients came in on her day off, says Kandel, after staying up until 4 AM delivering babies, just to bring her a...

Babies & Boys

I stopped by the new Urban Baby Runway today on Falls Road. It's a super cute shop and you can read about it in the November issue of Baltimore magazine. What I really love about her shop—is the brands she chooses to sell. I guarantee most you haven't seen before. And, because she has a son, the boy selection is pretty amazing. It's a small store—but has just the right amount of toys, clothes, and accessories. And it's right next to Soft and Cozy Baby which specializes in cloth diapers and babywearing. Two baby stores in Hampden! It seems like the Avenue is really filling all the gaps in with what's been missing. And speaking of, Sixteen Tons which promises "timeless goods for the modern gent", hopes to be open by Halloween in the old Squidfire spot. (More on that later.) Owner Daniel Wylie is the husband of Lesley, owner of the super popular doubledutch boutique. Men have been coming by her shop for ages asking about men's clothes and they finally decided to do something. Check out a small pop-up Sixteen Tons shop in doubledutch currently...

Where It's At

My mother and I love consignment shops. So, when she visited recently I went on a hunt for a mom-worthy store.  The store that kept popping up in my research was Wear It’s At—on Main Street in Reisterstown. We headed over Sunday after brunch, arriving around 12. It was amazing. I was a little skeptical thinking the place would be super tiny—but I was really wrong. The main room is filled with racks—juniors, sportswear, eveningwear, shoes, handbags, and jewelry. The best part was the little room off to the left side of the store —a secret gem. This is the good stuff—Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton—all reasonably priced considering the brand names and condition of the pieces. For the non-desinger crew there is everything from American Eagle to Juicy Couture to Chico's to Vera Bradley and BCBG. I was able to persuade my mother into thinking I needed many, many dresses to add to my wardrobe—an awesome light gray LA Made cotton dress with a rather large cowl neck, an ivory lace and tweed dress by Rebecca Taylor (never worn!), and a black one shoulder cocktail dress (with pockets!) by Ralph Lauren Black Label. I also bought a beautiful Nicole Miller asymmetrical...

The Hill Fashion Consignment

In the same spot where Love Allie used to be, The Hill Fashion Consignment (1201 Light St., 410-294-8892) is now in full swing. Although owners Ben Abdallah and Anna Dickerson live in Canton, the couple decided that Federal Hill would be a great spot for their women’s consignment store. I was able to stop in after work and look around a bit. The space is small, but cozy. There are many racks of clothing, shelves of shoes and handbags, and a case for jewelry and small accessories. They currently stock some great brands including Coach, Burberry and Banana Republic, and also cater to a younger crowd with American Eagle and Bebe. They are constantly looking for new items—as long as it’s clean and in good shape, of course. —Nikki Reese, intern ...

Lululemon Athletica

Word on the street, well, at least at my gym, is that Lululemon Athletica—a yoga inspired athletic company—is opening a showroom in Fells Point. According to the site, the showrooms are "a cozier version of a retail store with a limited selection of products. Showrooms are only open part of the week so that we can be out in the community meeting our neighbours and participating in local yoga and fitness classes. We open showrooms to become part of the community to share our culture, work with local athletes and provide a retail location that is unique to that area."

A lot of my friends are obsessed with the Lululemon pants (which hover close to $100) ... and they've been able to control themselves because the closest shop is in Annapolis. This might be dangerous. More details as I get them. —JED
