Baby Wearing

Talk Shop is on maternity leave (my mini shopper was born January 12th) ... but still checking in on occasion. Last weekend mom and babe attended a great (free!) babywearing class at Bediboo. Taught by certified babywearing instructor Marie Rinkoski Spangler—expecting her second baby this spring—the class covers all different types of baby carriers including Mei Tai, Ergo, wraps and slings. Marie went over each one, demonstrating proper techniques and answering questions. I had brought along a wrap and Ergo I already owned and she took the time to show me again (and again) how not to be intimidated by suspending my new baby in a big piece of fabric. Gretchen—Bediboo owner—carries a good selction of carriers in her store including some "pre-loved" ones.—JED

Love Allie Boutique

lovealliehours-dscf4128-wa-copy.jpg

A Q&A with Love Allie Boutique owner Carolyn Strong, 35.

When did you open the store? July 2008.

How did you end up in Federal Hill? I first checked out Mt. Vernon and Hampden. In 2008, I was introduced to Federal Hill. It reminded me of a smaller Georgetown or Adams Morgan.

How did you get into the business? My appeal for vintage grew from my grandmother Allie—for whom the store is name. She had her own personal style—especially on Sunday when she would go to church. Vintage clothing has a uniqueness that fashion designers often replicate.

What were you doing before you opened Love Allie Boutique? Commuting to New York City's Parsons the New School for Design to study fashion until I decided to open my own shop.

What are people’s reactions to your shop? Most people are drawn to the unique merchandise and the interior of the store.  Its a French provincial vintage theme with a story of  past fashion...

Bride 2009

Bride spring/summer 2009

Our brand spanking new Bride spring/summer 2009 should be hitting newsstands any day now. While obviously bias, I think this is one of our best issues ever filled with a wealth of information on everything from dresses to table settings to flowers and cakes. Our Aisle Style section is really visual with great ideas for invitations, shoes, food, gems, and groom items. We're always looking for ways to improve upon what we do—so I'd really love feedback as to what's missing and what bride-to-be's love. I love our Real Weddings section too and all the great photographers who get to showcase their work. It almost makes me wish I wasn't already married—just so I could take advantage of all the great advice. We get a little lull here before we start working on Bride 2010—so let us know your thoughts. And happy planning!

Sprout & the Style Network

sprout-logo.gif

Somehow I missed the original airing of Hampden salon Sprout on the Style Network's Split Ends. Embarrassing because it's the salon I use and because I love all beauty/fashion/cooking reality shows. (I did catch most of the episode a few days later.) The premise of the show—according to the web site—is hair-raising drama unfolding as two polar opposite stylists swap salons. That was certainly the case with Sprout owner Rachael Epstein and the salon she got shipped to in Texas. It's worth catching the episode for some good tree climbing and a lesson in eco-friendly products. The next viewing of this episode will be Wednesday, January 14th at 2 PM.

And then there was one ...

Sadly, Federal Hill's Holly G is closing its doors on Sunday, January 18th. That's the bad news. The good news is for the next two weekends all clothes and shoes will be 75% off. Everything else in the shop will be 50% off. Even better news: The Mt. Washington location will remain open and is offering 60% off shoes and clothing. Holly G was one of the first high end boutiques to pop up on Charles Street and has been followed by an impressive rooster: Babe, Whimsy/Reason, etc. And owner Gwendy Long has always impressed us with her ability to do it all: successful boutique and successful law career.

Wish They Had It In My Size ...

image005.jpg

Maybe it's because this curly-haired tot reminds me of my son, but I have fallen madly in love with this furniture line. The Muu line is made in the USA, from sustainable material and you get to personalize the pieces (crib, nightstand, dresser, bed, storage unit) with cool images (scooters, elephants, flowers) and baby's name.

My Wish List

I really don't want/need much this holiday season. But if anyone was interested, here are some of my faves.

1) I am not a calendar on my Blackberry kind of gal. I love a planner—where I can flip forward and backward to see what's coming up and what I've done. (I save my calendar insert every year—not sure why but I feel bad throwing it out.) So, after many years, my Kate Spade organizer has taken a beating. I'd like a new one, please. I love the gold interior.

2) Sea Salt Caramels. Yum. There's just something about the sweet and salty that makes me so happy. These look divine—but I especially love the locally made Mouth Party.

3) I'm about to give birth (four weeks and counting) and it's going to be cold and I'm going to be up in the middle of the night with a very small human. My feet deserve...

Shave and a Haircut

img_0767.jpg

Stopped by Quinntessential Gentleman today to pick up some items for my Thursday UpFront Shopping shoot. Check out their new sign—created by Gable Signs (a local Maryland company.) Owner Craig Martin says it's the world's largest straight razor.

Annapolis Towne Centre

On Thursday, I braved the icky weather to head down 97 and hit the new Annapolis Towne Centre. There are still lots of shops not open yet (including Urban Chic), but if you can stand the construction noise while you shop—it's still worth the trip.

I could spend hours at Anthropologie. The displays are insanely gorgeous and clever and even though I didn't buy them I was fawning over the Eat Local dessert plates and monogrammed cuffs. I also loved the...
