Let’s talk about your Visa card, your cash, and, yes, even your American Express: This month, you can leave home without them.
First, treat yourself gratis to samples of produce, drinks, snacks, cheeses, and other goodies at select local markets. Then, tour the gardens and trails of the Cylburn Arboretum in Mt. Washington with its new visitor’s center—yes, for free. Or, make an evening of it by gazing at Mars and Mercury through the new observatory telescope at the Community College of Baltimore County in Dundalk—also free. (See a pattern here?)
In fact, when we went in search of fun things to do in greater Baltimore that cost nothing, our editors—each of whom has different areas of expertise, such as food, the arts, the outdoors, etc.—were surprised at just how many options there were.
We hope you’ll enjoy our list. And if you think of others we missed, let us know. Your penny-pinching fellow readers will love you for it!I mentioned some months ago the proliferation of popular blogs that our staffers are writing on our website, baltimoremagazine.net and how we get the word out on the magazine through various social media, as well as regular appearances on the region’s most popular TV and radio news shows by magazine editors.
But if you haven’t visited our website recently, you should take a fresh look: Now there are compelling and constantly updated video segments that offer yet another dimension to the magazine’s coverage of Baltimore, from footage of Olympic gold medalist and Hall of Fame figure skater Dorothy Hamill building the new adaptive skating program for physically challenged kids at the Kennedy Krieger Institute to managing editor Max Weiss’s Editor’s Corner, a behind-the-scenes look at each month’s top stories.
Helping us with the video content is John Sherman, a veteran TV broadcast journalist and managing partner of Storyfarm New Media, who, along with his career-TV cameramen and partners, Beau Kershaw and John Brosnan, get as much of a kick out of being part of America’s oldest city magazine as we get showcasing their work.
Check it out. We’d love to get your reaction. You can let me know personally through my Facebook page. I welcome friend requests from our readers! Finally, I’d like to thank all the friends and colleagues who have expressed their sympathies following the death from cancer in April of my older brother and best friend, Cosimo Michael “Toodie” Geppi, Jr. My sister, Sylvia, and I will remember him as the patriarch of the family, but also as someone who could make people laugh, whether they were friends or strangers. My heart goes out to his wife, Diane, his son, Stevie, and daughter, Chrissie, and his two grandchildren, Caden and Tatum.
