As you can imagine, I get a lot of people asking me about the kind of guy I go for. I’m constantly accused of being “too picky” and told that I will never find my version of Mr. Right. Personally, I don’t agree. Throughout my life, I have realized what matters to me, and I don’t think my requests are anything extreme. But you judge for yourself.
First, I want a guy who has a job. And if you think that’s being picky, you should just stop reading here. And no, it’s not because I am looking for a sugar daddy, but because I think it’s a fair request to want a man who can support himself. I work hard, and I need someone with the same work ethic, or else I’ll be doomed to spend the rest of my life hearing, “Why do you work so much?” And that gets old real fast.
I want a guy who knows how to make me laugh, and, more importantly, knows when I need to laugh. I am the type of girl who prefers something that shows you really know me. Like . . . pool toys for my bathtub or white flowers just because.
I want someone who knows when I want to be left alone, who isn’t afraid to apologize, and who knows how close I am to my family and won’t ever try to change that. (If you don’t love them, then you can’t possibly love me, and, therefore, I won’t love you.) I want a guy who treats animals with respect—my dog has proven a great judge of character, so if he doesn’t like you, there has to be a reason.
I want someone who understands that farting in front of me is not a turn on. Someone who takes care of himself but doesn’t spend more time getting ready than I do. Someone who is confident but not cocky or arrogant. I want someone who enjoys a lot of the same things I do but also introduces me to new things and places. Someone who loves to travel but accepts that my favorite vacation spot will always be Walt Disney World. Someone who agrees that Baltimore is the best city in the world.
And, of course, most importantly, I want someone who is honest and faithful and doesn’t make me cry.
So am I being too picky? Are my requests that farfetched?
Let’s put it to the test. I am challenging my readers to set me up with someone they think would be a good match for me. Three submissions will be chosen, and I will go on dates with the selected suitors and then write an upcoming column about the experiences. And don’t worry, names will be changed to protect the innocent. So e-mail me at baltimorebach@gmail.com if you’re up for the challenge.
