Each year, our nation’s capital hosts the National Cherry Blossom Festival to remember the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington. Today, more than 1.5 million people visit Washington, D.C.’s, Tidal Basin to celebrate the blooms and the arrival of spring.
This year’s festival will take place March 20-April 14 and feature both free and paid events, including garden and food tours, cruises, Japanese culture workshops, fireworks, and more. The highlight of this springtime celebration is set to take place April 13 as the 2013 National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade will take over Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th streets, NW. This high-energy parade will feature blossom-inspired costumes, colorful balloons and floats, marching bands, and performers from across the country. As always, the parade is free to the public and more information about all of the festival events can be found by calling 877-44-BLOOM or by visiting nationalcherryblossomfestival.org.
