April has finally arrived and, with it, what I refer to as my favorite holiday of the year: Opening Day at Camden Yards. Just the thought of it immediately fills me with the excitement of a child the night before Christmas. From April to October, baseball is my religion. And as a single in the city, there is probably no better place to celebrate that singleness than at an Orioles game.
Think about it: a classic American ballpark nestled in the heart of Charm City positively swarming with single men who share my love of the sport, our Birds, and, most likely, beer and nachos. It’s like a veritable smorgasbord of men! I don’t know the exact statistics, but just from the amount of games I attend each season, I would wager that the ratio of men to women there is at least 3:1. And that’s just at the actual games. I haven’t even mentioned the number of guys who are tailgating on Washington Boulevard before the game: Pickles Pub, Sliders Bar & Grille, Frank & Nic’s West End Grille, and The Bullpen could easily give Patti Stanger (aka The Millionaire Matchmaker) a run for her money when it comes to hooking people up. The atmosphere just lends itself to meeting new people! Heck, I even ended up kissing a Yankees fan whom I met at Sliders last season! (Call it temporary insanity.)
Then there is the new Roof Deck that was added in centerfield last year, or as I call it, “Single to Center!” This first-come-first-served area of the ballpark is a great place to meet up with friends, and, more importantly, make new ones. It provides not only a great view of the game and TVs, but also cover if it rains. This would also be my No. 1 recommended place to meet up with a blind date. Never thought of the ballpark as a first-date option? Shame on you.
But in an arena of men such as this, there are some things we ladies need to keep in mind. Namely, the buddy system! There is no shortage of drinking on game day, so I always make sure I don’t go anywhere alone. It seems simple, but there is safety in numbers. Also, don’t assume that all the guys are “free agents.” While it’s not a foolproof method, the best thing you can do if you think a guy might be married, but don’t see a ring, is ask. And my personal belief, KNOW THE GAME! That way, even if you strike out in love, the evening is not a bust.
So break out your O’s gear and head to the ballpark this season—as often as you can! You will definitely find me there nearly every game. And while I can’t promise either of us will meet the love of our lives there, I can promise that it’s always a good time. But, every once in a while . . . something magic happens.
