This is my third year creating my own Best of Baltimore list, and while my selection process can really only be described as, “I know what I like,” here’s hoping you find some things on it that you like, too!
Best Reason to Mar Your Manicure: Eating steamed crabs. I don’t care if you just paid $60 to get a gorgeous French manicure from your favorite nail spa, when someone in Baltimore says, “Let’s go eat steamed crabs!” your only answer should be, “YES!” My personal fave spot to pick some cuticle-conquering crustaceans? Mr. Bill’s Terrace Inn in Essex. (And while we are on the subject, my gel mani from Scrub Nail Boutique in Fells repeatedly withstands a good crab picking.)
Best Cocktail Creations: Landmark Theatres in Harbor East. Go figure. This ever-changing drink list, created by bar manager Ginny Lawhorn, surpasses the taste and creativity of any standalone bar in the city. Themed along with the current movies in the theater, you will be amazed that they cost the same as your popcorn.
Best Place to Meet Successful Single Men: Ouzo Bay. Besides the fact that Will the bartender is both attentive and adorable, the place seems to always be full of good looking people . . . with jobs!
Best Place to Drink Wine in Your Workout Clothes: V-No in Fells Point. Quaint enough to be charming, yet casual enough to be a convenient stop even when you aren’t dressed your best but are hankering for a glass of wine. My friend Dayna and I frequently drink here in our sweats.
Best Return of a Retro Food: Deviled Eggs. Since I was a little girl, deviled eggs have been my favorite dish to see at a potluck dinner, baby shower, or summer barbeque. And now local chefs are giving these goodies the respect they deserve by adding them to their appetizer menus. Places ranging from Leinenkugel’s Beer Garden to Wit & Wisdom are offering these timeless treats, and I, for one, think it’s—wait for it—eggcellent.
Best Eye Candy: DJ Luis Rosa. This year my winner shifts from a bartender to a DJ. Luis Rosa can be found all over town, from The Horse You Came In On Saloon to Luckie’s Tavern to Red Maple. His spinning skills are great, but ladies, I gotta tell you, his smile is even better. Always friendly, and masterful at keeping a party going, your only problem will be fighting all the other girls in line for his number.
I look forward to celebrating all that is great about Baltimore with you at the annual Best of Baltimore Party on August 1 at the Hippodrome!
